Railsplitters overpower Ohio Valley in home opener, 14-2

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Chris Salvey, Dalton Dedas and Brent Richey each homered while Ethan Elliott struck out 10 as the Railsplitters opened Lamar Hennon Field with a 14-2 shellacking of Ohio Valley on Friday afternoon.

Lincoln Memorial (3-3) scattered 15 hits, including six extra-base knocks, drew six walks and registered three hit-by-pitches to roll through the Fighting Scots (0-1), who mustered just four hits and committed five errors.

Dedas and Salvey both finished a triple shy of the cycle. Dedas went 3-for-3 with a double, a homer and four RBI, while Salvey went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI. Richey also went deep as part of a two-hit, three-RBI outing. Seth Hunt, Alex Allen and Walker Hennon added two hits apiece.

Elliott backed that solid offensive showing by dominating across five innings of work on the mound, as the senior lefty struck out 10, walked two and gave up only four singles to improve to 1-1 on the season. Elliott was pegged with just one earned run on his ledger.

The Railsplitters scored in each of the first five innings, highlighted by a five-run, two-out, first-inning rally and another five-run outburst in the fifth.

Salvey's two-run bomb opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, while Dedas capped the inning with a three-run tater just three batters later as the Railsplitters batted around in the frame.

Salvey doubled home a run in the second, while a throwing error allowed another LMU run to cross in the third. Will Reddick's sacrifice fly out and an RBI single from Dedas put two more runs on the board in the fourth.

The Railsplitters did the rest of their damage in the fifth frame, as Nate Stinson drove in a run with a sac fly and Allen scored on a dropped fly ball in centerfield before Richey connected on his three-run round-tripper.

Ohio Valley's only two runs came in the second and fifth innings. Garth Charlton singled home the Fighting Scots' run in the second, while Daniel Quinn drove in the other with a sac fly in the fifth.

No OVU player recorded multiple hits while Charlton was the only one to reach multiple times with a 1-for-2 effort that included a walk and a run scored.

Quick Hits

- Four relievers combined to hold Ohio Valley scoreless with an inning of work apiece down the stretch. Ben Wiley struck out the side in the sixth, while Jack Ryan worked a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh.

- Nicholas Shower took the loss for the Fighting Scots after allowing nine hits and six earned runs with three walks over three innings of action.

- The first five batters of the game struck out. Elliott started the game by striking out the side in the first before Shower struck out the first two he faced in the bottom of the first. Stinson snapped that streak with a two-out walk that sparked the Railsplitters' five-run first.

- LMU moved to 24-6 all-time against Ohio Valley with the victory. The Railsplitters also scored double-digit runs for the third consecutive game in the series.

- Despite their season-high 14 runs, the Railsplitters could have done substantially more damage if not for their 12 runners left stranded on base.
