ROME, Ga. – After playing Shorter to a draw through the first 22 minutes, the Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team closed on a 12-0 run and held the homestanding Hawks scoreless for the final 38 minutes to cruise to a 14-2 victory at Ben Brady Field on Friday night.
The win moves the Railsplitters to 2-0 for the second consecutive season and for the third time in the program's five-season history, while Shorter dropped its 12th consecutive match dating back to February 2018, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Ian Cook and
Craig Settles led the way for Lincoln Memorial, combining for eight goals and 13 shot attempts. Settles scored three goals and kick-started that 12-0 finishing flurry with the go-ahead goal at the 6:59 mark of the second quarter. Cook, meanwhile, scored five goals, including three in the third quarter alone.
Robert Tucker added two goals on a match-high 11 shots, while
Kyle Arcuri,
Chris Tucker and
Jordan Sullivan had a goal and an assist apiece.
Joe Conklin also contributed a goal.
Chris Woodard and Jordan Coates had the only two goals for the Hawks, as the Railsplitters produced a massive 48-20 edge in shot attempts.
It was slow going early on for both sides. Cook put the Railsplitters in front with a goal at the eight-minute mark of the first quarter, but Coates answered off a Trey Edge assist 90 seconds later to account for the only other goal in the period.
Settles got on the board and put the Railsplitters back in front at 9:05 of the second quarter, but it took less than a minute for the Hawks to respond on Woodard's man-up goal.
However, that would be Shorter's last goal of the match, as Settles gave the Railsplitters the lead for good at 6:59 in the second, sending LMU into the halftime locker room with a 3-2 advantage.
The Railsplitters then completely dominated the second half, outscoring Shorter 11-0 while posting a 22-12 margin in shot attempts.
Cook scored seven seconds apart early in the third quarter to extend the lead to 5-2, while Sullivan scored a man-down goal at 5:30 and Tucker converted a man-up goal just a minute later to push it to 7-2. Cook capped the third-quarter scoring with an unassisted goal with 10 seconds left in the third to make it a six-goal cushion.
Six different players scored in the Railsplitters' six-goal fourth quarter, highlighted by man-up goals by Tucker and Settles.
