HARROGATE, Tenn. — It was all the Railsplitters from start to finish Friday night.
Powered by a team .458 hitting percentage, while limiting Cumberland to a minimal .031 clip, the Lincoln Memorial University men's volleyball team comfortably dismantled the Phoenix for the 3-0, 25-12, 25-10, 25-12, sweep inside Mary Mars Gym.
The victory handed the Railsplitters (9-6) their second straight and sixth consecutive home win to stay undefeated on their home floor.
LMU was led by
Jacob Titus' match-high six kills, while
Jordan Walley used his 1.000-hitting percentage, four kills and three match-high categories: service aces (6), blocks (5) and points (13) to pace the Railsplitters. As a team, LMU had 17 service aces to Cumberland's two as Walley's aces led the Railsplitters and
Randy Rivera chipped in three, while
Evan Cory and Logan and
Lucas Kerley had two apiece.
Nico Triana and Randy
AJ Risavy, who had 19 assists and four digs, added one each, as well.
For the Phoenix (2-15), Arthur Amorim and Christian Lester matched Cory's five kills with the same number apiece. Amorim had Cumberland's lone block compared to LMU's 8.5, while Jordan Pierce, Brian Hogg and Jaycob all had four digs — like Risavy — for a four-way tie for match best.
In the opening set, Cumberland kept it close, responding after the Railsplitters used a 4-0 spurt to begin the match. However, coming within one point, 4-5, was as narrow as the set would get. LMU, who hit .300 compared to Cumberland's -.192 clip, ripped off a 6-1 run to go up five and from there, it wasn't close again. The Railsplitters used a 12-3 run — capped by one of Triana's two kills — to secure the first set.
It was a different set but the same story in set two. The Railsplitters upped their hitting percentage to .444 and continued to create problems for Cumberland on the net behind its percentage that sat at zero. LMU was a force to be reckoned with from a serve standpoint as the
Randy Rivera used all three of his service aces in one stretch, which highlighted an 8-1 Railsplitter run to go up 12-4. LMU never let up as another run — this one an 8-2 one —to finish the set saw four of Walley's service aces to put the Phoenix down 0-2.
Ironically, the Railsplitters finished the sweep with its secret weapon it had been using all evening: a service ace. It was from the hands of Triana and capped a 7-2 LMU run, which was partially thanks to the
Railsplitters hitting a blistering .632, to secure back-to-back nights of convincing wins inside Mary Mars Gym.
