HARROGATE, Tenn. — Rain didn't slow the Lady Railsplitters down Friday afternoon.
The damp conditions slacked off once play began at Dorothy Neely Field and from there, the Lincoln Memorial University softball team was in full control. The Lady Railsplitters started with a five-inning, 13-1, victory in game one before capping off the sweep in a six-inning, 10-2, game two win versus visiting Rochester College.
LMU (12-4) got off to a rocking start in the opening game. Of their 15 hits, nine were extra-base hits: four doubles, three triples and two home runs.
Sierra Hucklebee (2-for-2) paved the way, knocking one of her two triples in the second at-bat, and then
McKenzie Henry (1-for-1, walk) really got things rolling.
The freshman pelted her sixth home run of the season off the scoreboard for the first LMU runs of the day, and after
Emma Webb (2-for-2) knocked across her double,
Kelsie Hocutt ripped an RBI-single to cap the three-run first inning.
LMU added two more in the bottom of the second as Hucklebee used her second triple to get in position to score on a wild pitch. Webb continued a two-out rally with a single into left field, plating Henry, who walked, for the 5-0 lead.
In the third inning, freshman standout pitcher
Bailey Griffith showed she could work her magic at the plate, too, as she sent a double down the right-field line, bringing
Sami West (1-for-1,walk) home. It was then
Savannah Daniel's quick wheels, which allowed her to beat out the throw on a two-out infield single and bring home two more runs and go up 8-0.
The fourth inning was when the Lady Railsplitters really got to Rochester (0-2) and its starter Taylor Foy.
Sami West joined the triple club, smacking one into the outfield, and then scooted around the bases and scored on a double from
Grace Cochran (2-for-3).
Bella Buccellato was the next Lady Railsplitter to add onto the 15-run game as she belted her first-career blast off the scoreboard for a three-run shot. It was
Tori Voiles who put the finishes touches on the offensive havoc when she placed a bloop RBI-single into left field, scoring
Ty-Kella Goins.
The Warriors scored its only run on
Justice Smith (W, 4-0) in the top of the fifth inning via an RBI-groundout, but the lone run was the only blemish on the junior's outing where she allowed just two hits over five innings with four strikeouts.
In the second game, it took the Lady Railsplitters an inning to get going, but their 13-hit performance — for a total of 28 hits on the day —powered through when it mattered most. With the help of four total errors, LMU plated two in the second inning thanks to a pair of Warrior miscues before the bats really started heating up.
Cochran (2-for-4, double) rocketed a hit into left-center field, scoring Daniel and advancing to second. Two at-bats later,
Audrey Petoskey's liner ricocheted off the third baseman and resulted into a Cochran run and 4-0 lead. Voiles' bases-loaded walk completed the three-run third and five-run advantage.
The Warriors made things interesting in the fourth when Mackenzie Muncy (2-for-3, HR) shot a two-run blast over the wall, but that's the only runs Rochester would see as
Faith Howe (W, 3-2) never lost control of her start. The freshman tossed the complete six innings, allowing just those two runs on six hits along with four strikeouts.
LMU completely closed the door in the sixth inning, when it used a five-run frame to complete the second run-rule victory of the day. Hucklebee (1-for-2, HR) started the surge with her third home run of the season as she smoked the two-run shot over the center-field wall, scoring Cochran (single).
The errors continued to doom the Warriors while the Lady Railsplitters capitalized. Petoskey reached base via an error, and then scored thanks to a wild pitch before Voiles' sac fly plated West.
Elise Bruce capped the sweep in walk-off fashion as she sliced an RBI-single through the left side, bringing Buccellato home for the consecutive double-digit scoring performance.
