HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Railsplitters and Eagles were 2-2 after the doubles and three singles matches at the LMU Tennis Complex Wednesday afternoon, but LMU then swept the final three matches to defeat Carson-Newman 5-2 and pick up their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season and eleventh straight win over the Eagles.
The Railsplitters (7-3, 1-1 SAC) had a relatively easy time in doubles play, as they swept all three flights to take the point.
Iker Moure and
Moritz Hoerner downed Marc Bantel and Joseph Stiles 6-1 at the third spot to improve to 7-2 on the season and 2-0 in SAC play, while
Fabian Sjokvist and
Sebastian Colla won over Gabriel Dabdab and Jesus Bacete 6-3 at the first spot.
David Segarra and
Jake Tuchmann had a bit of a scare from Rintato Oka and Hernan Toledo at the second spot before pulling out the 6-4 win.
Four of the six singles flights went to three sets, which made for a long afternoon of tennis. At the first spot, Segarra dropped the first set to Dabdab 6-4 before rallying back to win the next two sets 6-1 and 6-0 and remain undefeated against SAC opposition in 2019.
The Eagles then picked up their only two points of the day and made the overall score 2-2 as Toledo bested Hoerner at the no. 3 flight 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and Bacete won over Sjokvist in a grueling 7-5, 6-7, 7-5 decision.
Moure picked up his eighth win in ten matches as he won at the second spot over Oka 6-4, 6-2, and Colla gave LMU the win with his 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win over Bantel at the four spot. Tuchmann then won over Victor Ireno 6-1, 6-2 at the six spot to end the day.
The Railsplitters' last loss to Carson-Newman was a 5-4 decision in Jefferson City on April 3, 2009.
LMU travels to Lenoir-Rhyne for a Saturday morning SAC matchup with the Bears.
