HICKORY, N.C. – A hard-fought South Atlantic Conference slug-fest between LMU and Lenoir-Rhyne came down to a pair of tiebreaker sets at the fifth singles spot as Lenoir-Rhyne outlasted LMU 4-3 Saturday afternoon.
The Bears took the doubles point with wins at the second and third spot, but LMU (7-5, 1-2 SAC) picked up the win at the first spot as
Johanna Delisse and
Kristin Vogel improved to 6-4 on the season with their 7-6 win over Marta Escanero and Lucy Whelan.
Marta Pinol put LMU on the board as she defeated Iulia Ponomareva 6-2, 6-1 at the no. 2 singles flight. L-R's Emily Murchland then bested
Amanda Dahlstrom in three sets at the sixth spot 6-3. 3-6, 6-2.
Julia Loos tied the match at 2-2 soon afterward as she defeated Diana Babinets at the fourth spot in three sets 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Delisse then was fell to Gemma Southwick at the no. 1 flight 6-0, 6-2, but again the Lady Railsplitters tied up the match with
Julia Valls' win over Escanero at the three spot.
The match came down to the fifth spot, where LR's Ally Garofali needed tiebreaker points in both sets to outlast Vogel 7-6, 7-6 and claim the match for the host Bears.
The Lady Railsplitters host Mars Hill in a SAC match Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Complex.
