HARROGATE, Tenn. – Eleven different players recorded a hit for the Railsplitters, who secured their 10th consecutive win with a 16-2 walloping of the Kentucky State Thorobreds on Wednesday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field.
Kentucky State (13-6-1) hung with Lincoln Memorial (21-8) throughout much of the game, as the Railsplitters held just a 5-2 lead through six innings. However, the home team exploded for four runs in the seventh and seven more in the eighth to blow the game wide open.
Alex Allen tripled twice, drove in four runs and scored twice, while
Seth Hunt had a triple and a double with three RBI.
Chris Salvey added a double, one RBI and one walk as part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while
Marco Rios chipped in two hits as well, including a three-bagger. Seven other players contributed a hit for the Railsplitters, while
Nate Stinson,
Zach Fritts,
Zuriel Collins and
Walker Hennon also notched an RBI.
Ben Wiley turned in a solid start for the Railsplitters, allowing just five hits while striking out a career-high eight batters over six innings of work. The senior righty surrendered just two runs to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Patrick Queener and
Jack Ryan combined to allow only a single hit over the final three frames. Queener was nearly flawless in his two innings of work, giving up no hits or walks while striking out two. Ryan also struck out a pair as the Railsplitters rolled up 12 punch outs total.
Russell Sims and Cameron Starks had the only multi-hit days for Kentucky State. Sims went 2-for-4 with a double, while Starks had a pair of singles. Jordan Ransom also had a solo home run for the Thorobreds.
The Railsplitters took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Hunt led off with a double that was misplayed by the left fielder, resulting in Hunt advancing to the third. He subsequently scored on a 6-4-3 double play two batters later.
Lincoln Memorial was then kept off the board over the next two innings by KSU starter Jacob Kelly, who gave up only three hits and three runs despite issuing four walks in 3.2 innings of work.
The Thorobreds tied the game on Ransom's no-doubt solo shot over the left-center wall in the top of the fourth, but the Railsplitters finally broke through against Kelly in the bottom of that inning, scoring twice on run-scoring triples from Allen and Rios to re-take the lead at 3-1.
Those two runs sparked a 15-1 finish for the Railsplitters, who added a run in the fifth and sixth innings before exploding in their final two trips to the plate.
Stinson singled home a run in the fifth, while a fielding error in right field allowed another Railsplitter to score in the sixth. Between those two halves, the Thorobreds notched their second run of the game on Starks' RBI single in the top of the sixth.
Nursing a 5-2 lead, Lincoln Memorial then broke the game wide open in the seventh on a three-run triple from Allen, which scored Salvey, Stinson and
Henry Moore after that trio singled, was hit by a pitch and singled. Allen scored on a wild pitch after his triple to extend the lead to 9-2.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Railsplitters brought 11 hitters to the plate, racked up seven hits and plated seven runs to put the Thorobreds away once and for all. Hunt's bases-clearing triple concluded the scoring in the inning and made it a 16-2 game. LMU did all of its damage that inning against KSU reliever Brandon Love.
Lincoln Memorial recorded its fifth game of the season with 15 hits or more and scored at least 16 runs for just the third time.
The Railsplitters complete their five-game home stand this weekend when they host Queens for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series. Game one is set for a 4 p.m. first pitch on Friday.
