HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team set a new program record for goals scored in a conference match and tallied just the sixth 20-goal outburst in program history to defeat the Mars Hill Lions 21-15 on Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Lacrosse Complex.
Five different players chipped in at least three goals in the most prolific offensive outing for the Railsplitters (3-6, 1-2 SAC) since April 2018. Lincoln Memorial also snapped a six-game winning streak, nabbing its first win since February 8, and locked down the first South Atlantic Conference win of the 2019 campaign.
Mars Hill (2-6, 0-4 SAC) remained winless in conference play and suffered its third straight loss against the Railsplitters.
Ian Cook scored five goals and added four assists to account for only the sixth game by an LMU player with at least nine points in program history. That effort is tied for the fifth-most points ever by a Railsplitter.
Kyle Arcuri nearly matched Cook's effort as well, pitching in five goals and three assists on a team-leading 12 shots.
Chris Tucker contributed four goals and an assist, while
Reggie Golfin and
Robert Tucker logged three goals apiece.
The Railsplitters produced a season-high 55 shots and 43 shots on goal while limiting the Lions to just 38 shots and 25 shots on goal.
Zac Carrigan paced Mars Hill with five goals and an assist, while Jake Trafton had two goals and two assists. Jackson Courson added three goals and an assist, while Spencer Andrews pitched in two goals and an assist.
It was all Lincoln Memorial early as goals from Golfin, Cook and Arcuri in the first two and a half minutes put the home team in front 3-1. The first-quarter lead eventually jumped to 5-2 on
Robert Tucker's first goal of the match, but Mars Hill scored with 2:21 left to cut the deficit to 5-3 at the end of one.
The Lions added another goal from Courson just 1:02 into the second quarter to close the gap to one, but the Railsplitters promptly rattled off a 4-0 spurt – with four different players scoring over that span – to extend the lead to 9-4 by the 7:28 mark.
The two teams traded a pair of goals apiece over the next passage of play to keep the Railsplitters in front comfortably, 11-6, but Mars Hill scored twice in the final 1:49 of the half and added two more goals to start the third quarter to cut the deficit down to 11-10.
However, the Railsplitters maintained their composure and never relinquished the lead, as goals from
Chris Tucker, Arcuri and Golfin comprised a 3-0 flurry that made it 14-10 with 7:27 left to play in the third.
Mars Hill cut the lead down to two goals again after that before Arcuri scored twice in the final three minutes of the third to send LMU into the fourth with a 16-12 lead.
Lincoln Memorial never led by less than three in the fourth quarter and closed the match on a 4-1 run to seal the victory.
Robert Tucker scored twice in the final four minutes to power that closing stretch.
The Railsplitters grabbed 44 ground balls compared to 32 for the Lions and went 27-for-40 at the face-off x.
Hunter Clark took all 40 face-offs for the Railsplitters and established a new program record with 18 ground balls. He now claims the four-highest ground ball totals in program history.
Trenton Cameron made 10 saves between the pipes to pick up his third win of the season. His counterpart, Joel Borman, made 22 saves and allowed 21 goals to suffer the loss.
The Railsplitters are back in action on Saturday when they pay the Catawba Indians a visit for a 1 p.m. match in Salisbury, N.C.
