Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Dahlström's three-set marathon win powers LMU past Anderson, 4-3

ANDERSON, S.C. – For over four hours on Thursday it was a collegiate tennis version of The Iliad between the Trojans of Anderson University and the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial University as the teams battled to a 3-3 tie. In the end it was a Swede bearing the gift as freshman Amanda Dahlstrom pulled out the three-set win in her flight to propel LMU past Anderson 4-3.

The Stockholm native improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play as she and AU's Hannah Weaver battled for nearly two hours at the sixth singles spot with the match on the line. Dahlstrom took the first set 6-3 only to see Weaver battle back in the second set to take the 7-5 decision. It all came down to a third set as both teams and her parents, who are visiting from Stockholm, watched on. After Dahlstrom claimed the third set 6-3 and gave LMU the 4-3 victory over Anderson she was swarmed by her teammates in celebration.

Coming into the day Anderson led the all-time series 7-3, but LMU picked up the win in Harrogate last season and was looking for their second win ever on Anderson's home courts. Their only other win there was a 5-4 victory on March 4, 2016.

The Trojans captured the doubles point as Laura Dean and Mirna Curcic defeated LMU's Johanna Delisse and Kristin Vogel 6-4 at the first spot, while Hannah Tarlouskaya and Jacqueline Olivia won over Dahlstrom and Kiersten Waugh 6-3 at the third spot.

At the second spot, LMU's Julia Loos and Julia Valls improved to 11-3 on the season as they defeated AU's Weaver and Victoria Wuilloud by a 6-3 margin.

The action then moved over to singles play, where Dean bested Delisse 6-2, 6-2 at the first spot to put the Trojans ahead 2-0. Valls then put LMU on the board with her 11th win of the season and fourth SAC win as she defeated Curcic 6-4, 6-4 at the no. 3 flight. Marta Pinol added an additional point for the Lady Railsplitters soon afterward as she picked up her 52nd career win with the three-set 2-6, 7-6, 6-0 win over Tarlouskaya at the second spot.

There was another three-set match at the fifth flight, where Vogel lost the first set 7-5, won the second set 6-1, but fell in the third set 6-3.

Soon afterward at the fourth spot Loos blasted Olivia 6-0, 6-0 to remain undefeated in SAC play at 5-0 and improve to 13-3 overall for the season.

With the match tied at 3-3, both teams then turned their attention to the battle going on at the sixth flight and awaited the outcome.

The win moves the Lady Railsplitters to 9-5 on the season and 3-2 in the South Atlantic Conference, while Anderson falls to 9-5 overall and 1-3 in SAC play.

LMU will try to keep the momentum going and win three in a row as they host 19th-ranked Wingate in a SAC match Saturday at 11 a.m. at the LMU Tennis Complex.
