Bellarmine powers past Railsplitters in doubleheader sweep

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A pair of timely home runs delivered the Bellarmine Knights to a doubleheader sweep of the Lincoln Memorial baseball team on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field.

The Railsplitters (23-11) were in control in game one until Bellarmine (15-12) roared back and sealed a 7-5 comeback with a walk-off bomb in the bottom of the seventh. The Knights then broke a 4-4 stalemate with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning in an 8-4 win in the nightcap.

Lincoln Memorial suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since falling at Lynn and King in succession from February 16-19. The Railsplitters entered Wednesday's doubleheader as winners in 12 of their last 13 games overall.

Bellarmine, meanwhile, continued its recent dominance of Lincoln Memorial, extending its winning streak in the series to five games while improving to 7-2 in the last nine meetings.

The Railsplitters will return to Lamar Hennon Field this weekend to host Findlay for a three-game nonconference series beginning with a single game at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Game One: Bellarmine 7, Lincoln Memorial 5

The Railsplitters entered the bottom of the fifth inning leading 5-0, but Bellarmine rallied all the way back by scoring seven unanswered runs, punctuated by Tyler Neeley's walk-off, two-run home run, to win game one.

Lincoln Memorial jumped all over the Knights in the top of the first, bringing nine batters to the plate in a three-run frame. Dalton Dedas walked and Tyler Adams singled before Chris Salvey drove home Dedas with a single back up the middle. A fielding error allowed another run to score before Brent Richey singled in another run with the Railsplitters' fourth hit of the inning.

Salvey connected on his ninth home run of the season to lead off the third inning, extending the Railsplitters' advantage to 4-0, while Will Reddick drove home another run for LMU in the top of the fifth with a sac fly to left field.

That 5-0 lead looked like it would be more than enough for starter Ben Wiley, who allowed just three singles without a run through the first four frames, but Bellarmine got its rally started in the bottom of the fifth inning.

After a double from Derek Burns and a bunt single by Alex Phillips put the Knights in business, Matt Higgins singled home the first run of the game for the home team, while a passed ball two batters later pushed another run across. Deylen Miley singled home the third run of the inning to chase Wiley from the game with two outs in the fifth.

Hudson Widrig took over for Wiley and recorded the final out of the inning to send the game to the sixth with LMU nursing a 5-3 lead.

A two-out walk then proved costly for the Railsplitters in the bottom of the sixth, as Chris Gambert walked on four pitches, advanced to third on a double by Burns and scored on another single from Phillips to cut the deficit to 5-4.

With Lincoln Memorial looking to add an insurance run in the seventh, Nate Stinson led off with a triple, but the Railsplitters were unable to score him to extend their lead.

The Knights then completed their rally in the bottom of the seventh off Devin Morris. Wiley led off the inning with a double and scored in the next at-bat on a single from Miley to tie the game. After a strikeout, Neeley belted the game-winning blast to right-center field to complete the comeback.

Seth Hunt, Salvey and Richey led the Railsplitters with two hits apiece. Salvey paced that trio with two RBI and two runs scored. Adams and Reddick added RBI, while Stinson and Alex Allen accounted for the only other hits of the game for the Railsplitters.

Morris took the loss for the Railsplitters, falling to 0-4 on the season after giving up three hits and three runs in the bottom of the seventh frame.

Game Two: Bellarmine 8, Lincoln Memorial 4

Another home run made a big difference for Bellarmine, as Zac Wiley cranked the go-ahead three-run homer to power a four-run fourth inning that helped the Knights clinch the sweep.

Bellarmine out-hit the Railsplitters 13-6 as five different players contributed multiple hits for the Knights. By contrast, Stinson and Allen were the only LMU players to tally multiple hits with 2-for-3 efforts, respectively. Allen doubled as did Joe Stucky, while Richey accounted for the only other hit of the game for the 'Splitters.

The Knights struck early against LMU starting pitcher Joe Bobiak, using four hits to plate three runs in the bottom of the first. Phillips led off with a single and scored on a double by Higgins. Two batters later, Miley delivered an RBI single back up the middle.  After a 6-4-3 double play, Clayton Mehlbauer drove in Wiley, who walked, with a single.

Bellarmine added another run to its lead in the second frame, stringing together three straight two-out singles with Wiley's knock through the left side of the infield making it a 4-0 game.

The Railsplitters cut the Bellarmine lead in half in the top of the third as Allen led off with a single and scored on Stucky's double before Dalton Dedas drove Stucky home with a groundout.

Lincoln Memorial kept it going in the fourth frame, plating two more runs to tie the game at four apiece. Salvey was hit by a pitch and Stinson and Richey both singled to load the bases with no outs. Henry Moore's fielder's choice to second base scored Salvey, while a throwing error on the play also allowed Stinson to score to knot the score.

But Bellarmine regained control in the bottom of the fourth as Phillips singled and Higgins doubled in front of Wiley, who connected on a three-run home run to put the Knights back in front 7-4. Bellarmine added another run that inning when Gambert walked and scored shortly after on an infield error.

The Railsplitters never threatened again after that, going down in order in the fifth and sixth innings before Allen snapped a string of nine straight retired by the Bellarmine pitching staff with a one-out double in the seventh. That didn't amount to a rally for Lincoln Memorial, though, as the Knights held on for the sweep.

Patrick Queener took the loss for the Railsplitters after allowing four hits and four earned runs in 1.1 innings of relief work.

Wiley went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Bellarmine attack, while Higgins and Mehlbauer both had three hits while combining for three doubles.
