Hunt homers twice as Railsplitters split with Findlay

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Railsplitters came up with two timely hits in a 10-5 win in the opener of Saturday's nonconference baseball doubleheader at Lamar Hennon Field, but could not do the same in a 7-6 loss in the nightcap against the visiting University of Findlay Oilers.

Seth Hunt and Chris Salvey hit a pair of late home runs to help Lincoln Memorial (25-12) clinch the series in game one against the Oilers (10-12), who scored the go-ahead run via a sac fly in the top of the seventh to salvage the series with a win in the finale.

The Railsplitters are back in action on Friday, April 5 when they begin a three-game South Atlantic Conference series against Wingate at 4 p.m. at Lamar Hennon Field.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 10, Findlay 5

With the Railsplitters nursing a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, Hunt connected on a three-run home run to put Lincoln Memorial comfortably ahead. Salvey then belted a two-run dinger in the bottom of the eighth, and those five runs proved to be the difference in the end.

It was a slugfest throughout as Lincoln Memorial compiled 15 hits with five extra-base knocks including those two homers, while Findlay amassed 13 hits with five extra-base hits as well.

Hunt went 3-for-5 with four RBI, while Salvey also finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Brent Richey, Will Reddick and Henry Moore added two hits apiece, while Richey and Moore both doubled.

Eli Wright picked up the win for the Railsplitters, as the freshman righty improved to 3-0 on the season after allowing just three earned runs with eight hits over 5.1 innings of work. Devin Morris tossed a scoreless inning of relief, closing the door on the Oilers after being called from the bullpen in the ninth with a runner on first and no outs.

Wright's outing got of to a shaky start after Alex Foulks led off the game with a home run, but he settled in after that, holding Findlay scoreless over the next three frames.

The Railsplitters jumped in front over that same span, scoring three in the second and tacking on another in the third.

Reddick and Hunt had RBI singles in the second, while Tanner Head drove in a run that inning with a groundout to shortstop. Richey's RBI double accounted for the run in the third, scoring Nate Stinson from first after he reached via a fielder's choice.

Jordan Williams led off the top of the fifth with a double and scored following back-to-back groundouts to cut the Railsplitters' lead to 4-2, but an RBI single from Stinson erased that run in the next half inning. Tyler Adams scored on that play after leading off with a double.

The Oilers sparked a rally and worked their way back into the game again in the top of the sixth as a throwing error and back-to-back singles made it 5-3. A fielder's choice from Williams then closed the gap to 5-4 before Hudson Widrig worked out of the jam.

That all led to the final stretch and the two long balls from Hunt and Salvey.

Moore singled and Head walked to put two on in the sixth for Hunt, who belted his sixth home run of the season. After Findlay scored a run in the top of the eighth, Salvey connected on his 10th homer in the bottom of that inning after Alex Allen was hit by a pitch to make it 10-5, which proved to be the final margin.

Findlay left 10 runners stranded on base compared to nine for the 'Splitters.

Ethan St. Clair and Tyler Archambeau led the way for the Oilers with three hits apiece, while seven other players produced a single hit apiece.

Hunter Weis was dealt the loss after giving up 10 hits and five earned runs over 4.0 innings of work. He fell to 2-1 on the season in defeat.

Game Two: Findlay 7, Lincoln Memorial 6

The Railsplitters were in control with a 6-2 lead through four innings, but the Oilers scored four in the fifth and then pushed the winning run across with a sac fly in the seventh to salvage a win in the series.

Lincoln Memorial out-hit Findlay 12-7, but left six stranded on base and ground into two double plays to kill potential rallies in the fourth and fifth innings.

Hunt hit his second home run of the day as part of a 2-for-4 outing, while Richey went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run, his fourth of the season and first since February 25. Reddick went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double, while Dalton Dedas added a pair of singles.

The two teams traded runs early as an RBI groundout gave the Oilers the lead in the top of the second before Reddick doubled home the tying run in the home half of that inning. An RBI double from Ryan Johnson helped Findlay regain the lead in the top of the third until the Railsplitters hung five on the board in the bottom of that inning.

In the third, Lincoln Memorial took advantage of heavy winds carrying out to left field, as Hunt lifted a solo shot over the left-field wall before Richey took his three-run homer out the same way. After Richey's homer, Reddick sparked another rally with a single, stole second and scored on a single from Marco Rios to make it a 6-2 game.

The Railsplitters wouldn't score again after that, though, while the Oilers rallied to tie the game with a four-run top of the fifth. After a walk and a double, Derrick Herd and Johnson singled in back-to-back runs off starter Matt Mullenbach, who was then pulled from the game in favor of Bryson Sullivan

After a sac bunt moved the runners to second and third, an RBI groundout fro Casey Gould and an RBI single from Williams tied the game at 6-6.

Lincoln Memorial had a chance to retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Richey walked and Reddick singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. However, a groundout ended the threat.

The Oilers then manufactured the winning run in the top of the seventh as Herd walked, moved to second on a sac bunt and advanced to third on a single from Trevor Anderson before scoring on Gould's fly out to left.

LMU put the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh after Richey ripped a two-out double down the right-field line. However, a fly out from Reddick to deep center ended the game.

Sullivan was saddled with the loss for the Railsplitters after giving up the winning run in the seventh. He allowed just two hits and struck out two over 3.0 innings of relief to fall to 0-1 on the season.
