HARROGATE, Tenn. — Sierra Hucklebee saved her lone Thursday doubleheader hit for the right moment.
With a runner on third and the score knotted at 3-all in the bottom of the ninth inning, the freshman just needed to make contact.
She did just that as she sliced an RBI single through right centerfield, scoring
Bella Buccellato, who was placed on second due to the international tie-breaker rule, for the ninth-inning, 4-3, walk-off victory to complement the Lady Railsplitters' game one, 3-1, win over North Greenville University at Dorothy Neely Field.
The victory was LMU's eighth straight and fourth consecutive home doubleheader sweep.
McKenzie Henry (3 RBI) was responsible for putting the Lady Railsplitters (18-4) in position to force extras after her game-tying three-run home run— scoring Buccellato (hit-by-pitch) and
Ty-Kella Goins (single) — knotted the score at three in the bottom of the third inning.
It was in response to the Crusaders' early lead via a Taylor Koon RBI-double in the second inning followed by a two-run third, which came on an LMU error and Josie Reed's RBI-single.
But, the Lady Railsplitters rallied back as Henry's team-leading seventh blast rocketed over, and
Faith Howe (W, 5-2) worked some magic in the circle after she relieved
Justice Smith in the circle once NGU (5-10) took the 3-nil lead with two outs in the top of the third frame.
The freshman ended the bases-loaded threat with one of her career-high nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched while allowing zero runs on two hits. And then, Hucklebee did the rest, saving her first hit for her team's 10th and the game-winning RBI.
In the opening game,
Bailey Griffith (W, 8-2) held NGU to one run, which came thanks to a seventh-inning RBI-groundout, on five hits while striking out three.
Her offense did the rest in one inning. Even with just three total hits in the first game all the Lady Railsplitters needed was their three-run third inning. In that frame, two of LMU's trio of hits came as Goins (2-for-3, RBI) knocked her double through before advancing to third on
Sierra Hucklebee's sacrifice bunt.
Henry then hit a chopper to shortstop as the ball popped out, allowing the speedy Goins to score and the freshman to reach safely for the 1-0 lead.
Kelsie Hocutt (1-for-2, RBI, walk) followed with a rocket of a double to the right-field wall, scoring
Emma Webb, who reached on a fielder's choice and put herself into scoring position by stealing second, for the two-run lead.
Back-to-back wild pitches advanced Hocutt and scored her for the Lady Railsplitters' third and final run in the opening seven innings.
