GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – LMU picked up a win at the sixth singles flight and the second doubles spot, but in the end 16th-ranked Tusculum proved to be too much to handle as they defeated the Lady Railsplitters 6-1 Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Tusculum becomes the South Atlantic Conference champions, while LMU falls to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in SAC play. They are currently tied for sixth place with Anderson in the SAC standings with one game to go for each team.
TC won the doubles point after picking up wins at the first and third spots. At the first flight, the 25th ranked Pioneer duo of Annie and Caitlin McCullough won 6-3 over
Johanna Delisse and Keirsten Waugh. LMU then won at the second flight as
Amanda Dahlstrom and
Julia Loos defeated Julia Lopez and Africa Mota 7-5. The Pioneers then earned the match point for doubles as Emilie Hanson and Brittani Brooks squeaked by
Kristin Vogel and
Samantha Hogan 7-6 (7-3).
In singles, the Pioneers swept five flights to claim the win. At the first flight Annie McCullough bested Delisse 6-0, 6-3. Caitlin McCullough outlased Loos at the second spot 6-3. 6-4, and Hansen defeated Vogel 6-1, 7-5 in the third flight. Mota won over Dahlstrom 6-3, 6-2 in the fifth spot, and Waugh fell to Lopez 8-4 in the fourth flight.
Claudia Rodriguez was a bright spot for the Lady Railsplitters as she defeated Brooks 8-6 in the sixth flight to pick up the first SAC win of her career.
LMU closes out the regular season with a Senior Day match vs. Newberry. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at the LMU Tennis Complex.
