Second-half rally sends Newberry past Railsplitters, 17-12, in regular-season finale

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Lincoln Memorial men's lacrosse team held an 11-6 lead midway through the third quarter, but Newberry closed on an 11-1 run to come away with a 17-12 victory in the Railsplitters' regular-season finale on Saturday in Newberry, S.C.

The loss brings the 2019 campaign to an end for Lincoln Memorial, which fell to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in South Atlantic Conference play in defeat. Newberry, meanwhile, likely clinched their bid to the SAC tournament by moving to 9-5 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Ian Cook paced the Railsplitters with three goals and three assists, while Robert Tucker collected three goals and two assists on a team-leading 13 shots. Craig Settles chipped in two goals and an assist, while Kyle Arcuri notched a goal and an assist in the final match of his remarkable collegiate career. Chris Tucker, Reggie Golfin and Chad Walters contributed a single goal apiece.

Dylan Mansur and Stone Boone led the come-from-behind victory for the Wolves by combining for eight goals and three assists. Boone produced six goals, including three during that finishing stretch. Mansur, meanwhile, scored the game-winning goal and added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter. Jeremy Ross and Zachary Sunderland were also factors with three goals and an assist apiece.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw neither team lead by more than two and the Railsplitters establish a 7-6 lead, Lincoln Memorial opened the third quarter with a 4-0 run powered by two goals from Cook and goals from Golfin and Robert Tucker to pull ahead 11-6 with 8:28 to play in the quarter.

However, the Railsplitters would score only one more time the rest of the way, as Newbery rallied all the way back to tie the match with a 5-0 spurt, capped by Ross's goal 28 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Chris Tucker briefly put Lincoln Memorial back in the lead at 12-11 with a goal at the 13:17 mark of the fourth, but the Wolves ended the game with six unanswered goals. Boone tied it at 12:54, Mansur gave Newberry the lead 42 seconds later and then put the Wolves ahead for good at the 9:19 mark.

Kyle Dunklee, Sunderland and Boone punched in goals over the final 7:30 to close out the match and the 17-12 victory.

Newberry finished with a 42-41 edge in shot attempts, while the two teams were tied with 24 shots on goal apiece. Shots were mostly even in the second half, though the Wolves scored on 11 of their 24 second-half shots compared to a 5-for-20 effort for LMU over that same span.
