HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Railsplitters fell into an 8-1 hole early but scored nine unanswered runs to rally for a 10-8 victory over the King Tornado on Tuesday evening at Lamar Hennon Field.
King (14-25) jumped all over Lincoln Memorial (31-13) early, scoring three in the top of the first before hitting a grand slam in the second and adding one more in the third. However, the Railsplitter pitching staff settled down after that, holding the Tornado scoreless for the final six inning while the offense exploded for two runs in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to cap the come-from-behind victory.
Senior
Seth Hunt also hit a major career milestone in major style. Entering Tuesday's game, Hunt needed just one more hit to take over sole possession of the career hits record at Lincoln Memorial. In the bottom of the first, he lead off by blasting a solo home run to left center for hit number 241 of his career, surpassing
Logan Augustine for the program record.
Henry Moore also homered while going 3-for-5 with a walk,
Nate Stinson went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two walks, while
Will Reddick drove in three runs, including the two go-ahead runs with a double in the fifth.
Tanner Head added two hits as well, while
Chris Salvey and
Brent Richey chipped in an RBI apiece.
It was a tough go for starting pitcher
Ben Wiley, who was touched up for six hits and seven runs (three earned) over just 1.2 innings of work. The bullpen bailed out Wiley, though, as the combination of
Patrick Queener,
Jake Grenus,
Hudson Widrig,
Matt Walczak and
Devin Morris combined to allow just two hits and one run with nine strikeouts down the closing stretch.
Grenus picked up the win to move to 3-0 on the season, while Morris notched his sixth save of his freshman campaign.
Kevin Barbato singled in a run while Hunter Barbour doubled home two more to stake the Tornado to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After Hunt's solo shot cut into the King lead, the Tornado used a costly error to put four more runs on the board in the second. With two outs in the inning, an infield pop-up was dropped, and the next batter, Barbour, cranked a grand slam to straightaway center field to give the visitors a 7-1 lead.
Nick Carroll then hit a solo shot in the third to make in an 8-1 lead.
But the Railsplitters started their rally back in the bottom of that inning, as Reddick tripled home a run and scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-3.
The first three LMU batters in the bottom of the fourth walked and all three scored on a sac fly by Salvey, an RBI infield single from Stinson and an RBI single back up the middle from Richey to close the gap to 8-6.
The Railsplitters then took the lead in the fifth, as Moore ripped a solo homer, Stinson doubled home
Tyler Adams and Reddick doubled home two more to catapult the Railsplitters in front, 10-8.
After tony Valdes' leadoff single in the fourth, King did not manage another hit and accounted for just one more base runner via a walk in the top of the sixth. Widrig worked a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh, Walczak struck out the side in the eighth and Morris struck out one in a three up three down ninth to close out the game.
After the game, Lincoln Memorial culminated its fundraiser for the Vs. Cancer Foundation, which provides support for pediatric cancer research and victims, by shaving their heads. Up to now, the Railsplitters have raised over $16,000 for the Vs. Cancer Foundation this season alone.
A massive South Atlantic Conference series is on tap for the Railsplitters this weekend, as Lincoln Memorial hosts Newberry for the final series of the regular season. A sweep would give LMU its first-ever SAC regular-season title. Game one is set for 4 p.m. on Friday.
