No. 3 Newberry rolls in regular-season finale to clinch series against Railsplitters, 21-5

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Railsplitters ended the regular season on a sour note on Saturday at Lamar Hennon Field as the No. 3 Newberry Wolves rolled to a 21-5 victory to clinch the South Atlantic Conference series.

The loss drops Lincoln Memorial to 32-15 overall and 18-6 in South Atlantic Conference play. The Railsplitters get a first-round bye for the SAC tournament and begin postseason play on Friday, April 26 at Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tenn. against an opponent yet to be determined.

Newberry, meanwhile, finishes 38-12 overall and 21-3 in SAC play. The Wolves will be the top seed for the SAC tournament after clinching the first regular-season title in program history on Friday night.

Saturday's rain-soaked game was as lopsided as the final score indicated. The Wolves outhit the Railsplitters 16-6 and scored multiple runs in five different innings, including a six-run first, a five-run sixth and a four-run ninth. Lincoln Memorial also committed four errors and walked 10 batters while striking out only three. On the other side, the Newberry staff walked just four and struck out eight.

Will Reddick went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a double, while Brent Richey drove in two runs as well without the benefit of a hit. Four other players finished with a hit for the Railsplitters.

It was a tough go for freshman righty Eli Wright, as the starter recorded only one out while allowing two hits, five earned runs and walking three. He was pulled with one out in the top of the first with the Railsplitters trailing 6-0, and fell to 5-1 on the season with the loss.

Five Wolves produced multiple hits. Danton Hyman went 3-for-7 with two doubles, while Ian Clements drove in two runs as part of a 3-for-5 day at the plate. Dalton Landsdowne, Tony Matos and Luke Orr chipped in two hits apiece for Newberry.

Tomas Sorcia Jr. picked up the win for the Wolves after allowing just five hits and four runs with four walks and three strikeouts over six innings of work, improving to 7-0 on the season. Quinton Driggers notched the three-inning save after giving up only one run and striking out five.

Prior to the game, the Railsplitters honored their massive 12-player senior class, recognizing Seth Hunt, Ethan Elliott, Matt Mullenbach, Matt Walczak, Will Reddick, Chris Salvey, Joe Bobiak, Joe Stucky, Marco Rios, Jacob Grenus, Ben Wiley and Alex Allen with a pre-game ceremony.
