JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer kicked off conference play with a setback against Carson-Newman University on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Junior forward
Jorge Melgar netted the first goal for the Railsplitters at the 36th minute mark with a dish from senior forward
Ueslei Silva.
The hosting Eagles tied the game with a goal from Thaylan Silva just shy of 20 minutes into the second stanza. Carson-Newman eventually took the lad at the 79th minute with a successful strike from Sofian Maghouz.
TURNING POINT:
"We started out taking our time, keeping the ball in our control and taking care of it. Ultimately that led to a good goal against a good team," stated Spain on the first half of play for the Railsplitters.
Spain continued, "We scored, then they made adjustments the right way, whereas we adjusted to a hybrid-like version of our game plan which showed as we didn't get as many opportunities as we wanted. We played a good team and we will be better next time because of today."
TEAM STATS:
The Railsplitters closely trailed in shots (10-15), shots on goal (7-8), assists (1-2) and corner kicks (3-7).
THE KEEPERS:
CNU – Bram Kaarsgaren tallied six saves on the evening with one goal against
LMU – Freshman
Robin Hermann steered away six shots in-between the pipes
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
After today's matchup, the Railsplitters keep the lead at 8-7-1 all-time against Carson-Newman dating back to their first standoff in October of 2012.
