Melgar and Mathis Notch Goals in 2-0 Victory Over Queens

Railsplitters cruise by Royals in conference matchup

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer notched a 2-0 victory in a conference matchup against Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Junior forward Jorge Melgar scored his second goal of the season to get the Railsplitters going and taking a 1-0 lead after 18 minutes of play with a ball crossed over from sophomore midfielder Danilo Seglio.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Robin Hermann accumulated four saves throughout the first leg of action against the Royals. In the second half, Hermann contributed with three more saves leading to his second shutout throughout his first five games for the Blue and Gray.
 
Towards the later end of the second half, senior forward Aurochit Patnaik chipped in a goal that was reversed due to an offsides penalty that would have resulted in an earlier 2-0 lead.
 
At the 81:35-mark, freshman midfielder Sonnie Mathis found the back of the net for the second time this season, giving the Railsplitters a commanding 2-0 lead.
 
FRESH FACES:
­­­­­Over the past two games for the Railsplitters, there has been five freshmen starting at the first whistle. Hunter Stroble, Kasimir Lauber, Kriton Kiousis, Aimar Samaniego and Robin Hermann. Hermann has been in-between the pipes for the season thus far. In addition, JP Vinha and Sonnie Mathis have been making appearances as well contributing to today's victory.
 
DOING SOMETHING RIGHT:
Concluding today's match with a victory over Queens is notable due to their credibility in their program. The Royals were co-champions at the end of the 2018 regular season, eventually leading to a NCAA regional tournament appearance. The Royals soccer program was tabbed to finish-second in the SAC preseason poll for the 2019 campaign.
 
TEAM STATS:
The Railsplitters and Royals were neck-and-neck in shots (15-17), shots on goal (5-7) and corner kicks (7-5). In addition, LMU lead in possession over Queens, 56% to 44%.
 
THE KEEPERS:
QUEENS – Sebastian Kalk acquired three saves and two goals against on the evening.
LMU – Freshman Robin Hermann racked up seven saves leading to his first career win with the Railsplitters.  
 
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
After today's victory, the Railsplitters keep the lead at 5-3-1 all-time against Queens University of Charlotte backtracking to their first duel in October of 2012.
