Railsplitters and Bullldogs Fight to a Scoreless Draw

LMU holds Wingate to a tie after 110 minutes of play

WINGATE, N.C. – Lincoln Memorial University men's soccer traveled to Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina for a double-overtime 0-0 draw on Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Defense was easily noticed as the largest contributing factor to today's scoreless stalemate. Throughout the 110 minutes of play, there was a total of 27 shots taken and nine of them found the frame.
 
Junior forward Jorge Melgar came the closest to notching a victory for the Railsplitters as he had two-scoring opportunities in the 69th minute and in the 107th minute that brushed-wide of the post.
 
In addition, freshman midfielder Kasimir Lauber knocked a strike off the post in the 73rd minute for the Railsplitters.
 
Wingate accumulated 11 shots just within the two overtime periods, leading to freshman goalkeeper Robin Hermann tallying five saves just within the last 20 minutes of extra time to keep the stalemate.
 
DEFENSE:
After today's match, LMU tacks their third-tied game throughout their first-seven games this season. Wingate's Elliot Cutts who was named Astroturf SAC Player of the Week last week has marked four goals in the first five games for the Bulldogs before heading into today's contest against LMU. The Railsplitter defense held Cutts to zero goals today for the second time thus far this season after six shots and two shots on goal.
 
TEAM STATS:
The Railsplitters had a fair share of opportunities while trailing in shots (6-21), shots on goal (2-7) and corner kicks (2-7).
 
THE KEEPERS:
WINGATE – Jens Bergendorff tallied a pair of saves on six shots faced throughout the contest.
LMU – Robin Hermann compiled seven total saves, five occurring in the overtime periods on 21 shots faced in 110 minutes of action.
 
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
After today's ­­­­­­­­stalemate, the matchup record between the Railsplitters and Bulldogs is at (3-10-2) dating back to late October of 2007.
