HARROGATE, Tenn. - The LMU men's tennis team took their battle with Union College to the last match, but came up just a little short in falling 3-4 here Sunday afternoon.
Â
Union got the deciding point in a tense battle at #2 singles, where LMU's
Fabian Sjokvist and UC's Sebastiano Zorzi locked horns for three-plus hours before Zorzi closed out the match 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. Sjokvist fought off three match points in the third set before Zorzi forced two backhand errors to grab the final game and give the match to the Bulldogs.
Â
"Fabian gave us everything he had this weekend, and while he came up a bit shy of the win, he can hold his head high for his effort," said coach
Marc Walters, who saw his team drop to 1-2 on the season.
"If we get this kind of work from the guys over the next two months we have a good shot at reaching some goals in the conference and set us up for next year," said Walters.
Â
Just a day after dropping all three doubles in their match against The University of the Cumberlands, the Railsplitters took them all to start the day and grabbed an early 1-0 lead. Singles wins by Xavi Marti and
Jake Tuchmann pushed the 'Splitters to the brink of a win, but UC countered by winning the final four courts, all in three sets.
Â
LMU is off until next Sunday when they host Bellarmine (KY) University, in a inter-regional match. The match will be held at the LMU Indoor Tennis Center.
