HARROGATE, Tenn. – The LMU men's tennis team picked up wins at the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles flights, but visiting Bellarmine swept all three doubles flights and the ensuing point ended up being the difference as LMU fell to the Knights 4-3 Sunday afternoon.
The Knights quickly took the doubles point on the back of 6-1 and 6-3 wins at the second and third flight. The first flight was a dogfight, going to a tiebreaker, before LMU fell 7-6.
In singles action, Bellarmine went ahead 2-0 as LMU dropped the #1 flight.
Nic Goslar then put the Railsplitters on the board with a 6-4. 6-2 win at the fifth spot. The Knights then picked up another point with a win at #3 before LMU pulled the match to 3-2 with
Xavier Marti's 6-1, 6-2 win at the four spot.
Nathan Cooper was in a long drawn out set in his flight at #6, winning the first set 7-6 with a 12-10 tiebreaker and taking the second set 6-4, but with a win By Bellarmine at the #2 flight during that time the Knights took the 4-3 win for the match.
"It was a tough day on the courts for the Railsplitters, our kids put themselves in a position to win but came up just short in the doubles and that turned out to be the difference," said LMU coach Mark Walters. "We got another nice performance from
Nic Goslar and
Xavier Marti, as both guys continue to play solid doubles together and inspired singles. As long as we stay healthy at the bottom of the lineup I think we can compete with anyone.
Nathan Cooper stepped up as well in his first match time of the spring and got our third point"
LMU returns to the courts on Monday as they host West Virginia Wesleyan at 1:00 pm.
