AUGUSTA, Ga. – Despite battling well into the fourth hour, the Lincoln Memorial University men's tennis team dropped a close match Sunday afternoon at Augusta University. Falling by a 5-2 score at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta, Georgia, the lengthy affair was still in doubt deep into the match.
The Railsplitters fell to 1-8 on the season as the host Jaguars moved to 3-4.
"It was a tough day at the courts for both teams, and we just came up a bit short on the guys side," said head coach
Marc Walters. "Being in a position to win on the road with the last three matches in third sets, I finally felt like what a good competitive match should be. We'll learn from it."
After strong sets at the top two doubles positions by Augusta, the home team earned the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the contest. LMU trailed 3-1 and was down a set at each of the No. 4-6 singles spots before grinding back to even the matches and force deciding third sets. Freshman
Nic Goslar and senior
Jake Tuchmann had an opportunity to pull out their matches at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, respectively, but both ended up being edged in tightly-contested third sets.
Sophomore
Sebastian Colla captured his singles match with a valiant 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) win at No. 4, while Goslar came up short at sixth singles, 5-7, 6-0, 5-7. Tuchmann fell by a 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 score at the No. 5 line.
Senior
Xavier Marti continued his winning ways, claiming a default by injury triumph at No. 3 singles after taking the first set 6-0 and leading 1-0 in the second.
