AUGUSTA, Ga. – A gritty, 4-3 road loss to Augusta University snapped the Lincoln Memorial University women's tennis team's four-match win streak Sunday afternoon at the Newman Tennis Center in Augusta, Georgia. After capturing the doubles points, the Lady Railsplitters were unable to come up with three singles wins as the host Jaguars took four of the six singles matches.
With the loss, LMU drops to 7-2 on the season while Augusta improves 6-2.
The Lady Railsplitters held a 1-0 lead after doubles, where the duo of senior
Kiersten Waugh and sophomore
Amanda Dahlstrom came back from a break down to close out the point at the No. 2 spot, 6-4. However, the resilient Jaguars would not be phased and came back to capture hard-fought wins at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 3 singles positions.
Augusta methodically clinched the match victory, claiming a win at the No. 5 singles spot as well, before LMU took the final two singles spots behind strong efforts from juniors
Julia Valls and
Kristin Vogel. Valls won both of her sets in a pair of tiebreaks at second singles, while Vogel erased a 6-4 first set with a 6-0, 6-3 rebound to pick up the Lady Railsplitters' third and final point at No. 6 singles.
"No shame out there today," said head coach
Marc Walters about Sunday's results. "We are never satisfied with losing when you play an evenly-matched team, but in light of the level and overall effort we look to be in a good place going into our South Atlantic Conference matches."
