HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team (5-3, 4-3 South Atlantic Conference) put on a show with a dominant performance inside B. Frank 'Tex" Turner Arena Saturday afternoon as they defeated the visiting Mars Hill Lions (1-6, 1-6) by a score of 82-50. Five players scored in double figures and several set career highs in the victory.
LMU got off to an excellent start as
Lindsay Proffitt hit a three pointer to give the Lady Railsplitters the early lead. De'Ja Marshall responded with two free throws for the Lions, but
Lauren Flowers hit a fee throw and
Jordan Maney hit a three to extend the lead to five. After two more free throws by Katyah Foggie, Proffitt and Maney hit threes and Flowers made a layup to give LMU a double digit lead less than halfway through the quarter. A Foggie free throw momentarily stopped the run, but Proffitt made yet another three and Flowers scored twice, extending the lead to 17. The Lions made two more free throws in the quarter, but the Lady Railsplitters countered with six points of their own to take a commanding 28-7 lead into the second period.
Nakia Weston and
Grace Day made baskets that got the lead to 25 before a Gabby Gianikos three. The teams then went back and forth in the scoring column before Proffitt made another three pointer to give the Lady Railsplitters a 37-14 lead. A Maney three and another Kenny bucket ballooned the lead to 28 before the Lions went on a 7-0 run. Maney made a basket and Drew McMillan hit a free throw for the Lions to end the half with LMU leading 44-22.
The second half started just as well as the first as two Flowers free throws and Proffitt's fifth three of the contest extended the lead to 27. The teams then traded baskets for several minutes before a Kiser jumper gave LMU a 61-31 lead halfway through the third stanza. The lead hovered around 30 points for the next few minutes, and a Weston three extended the lead to 32. Two Kenny free throws closed out the quarter and the Lady Railsplitters had a 71-37 lead.
The final quarter was a formality as LMU continued to dominate and keep a huge lead. A Kiser three doubled up the score and the last few minutes saw both teams score several easy baskets.
Jaylah Mays then entered the contest and saw her first action of the season, pulling down two rebounds and notching a nifty assist for a Maney layup in the closing minute.
Maney led the charge once again with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals, while Proffitt finished with 15 points. Flowers had an excellent all-around game with 13 points, nine rebounds, and six assists and Kenny set career-highs with 13 points and five rebounds. Kiser rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. Weston also had her best game in the Blue and Gray with nine points and two steals and Day led the team on the boards with a career-best 10.
LMU will look to extend their winning streak to three as they take on UVA Wise on the road this coming Wednesday, January 20. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
