HARROGATE, Tenn. - Despite going on a late 13-0 run and fighting hard all game long, the Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team (5-6, 4-6 South Atlantic Conference) fell to UVA Wise (8-1, 8-1) in a fast-paced game inside the friendly confines of B. Frank "Tex" Turner Arena Monday evening.
LMU got the scoring started as
Addi Kirkpatrick made a layup inside, but UVA Wise pulled ahead as Hanna Oliver hit a three.
Lexi Kiser hit a free throw to tie, but Ada Stanley made a basket to give the Cavs a small lead. Consecutive three pointers by
Lauren Flowers gave the Lady Railsplitters a 9-5 lead early in the period. A Kalee Johnson three pointer cut the lead to one, but
Lindsay Proffitt made a jumper to get the lead back to three before
Jordan Maney made a layup. UVA Wise then went on a 6-0 run as Caitlyn Ross hit two free throws, Johnson made a jumper, and Nia Vanzant made a layup. Proffitt then scored in the paint and made a three to give the lead back to the Lady Railsplitters. The teams then traded baskets once again before Ross and Oliver made three pointers to close out the quarter with the Cavs in the lead.Â
A Meg Crawford layup extended the lead, but Kirkpatrick made a free throw to slow the UVA Wise surge. Vanzant and Kiser then traded three point baskets before each team made a layup. Another Crawford layup pushed the Cavalier lead to five. Kirkpatrick responded, but Crawford converted an and-one.
Mikayla Kuehne then made a three and a layup to slice the lead to one with six minutes left in the second quarter. A Kirkpatrick basket and a Kuehne free throw pushed the Lady Railsplitters ahead by one, but Ross and Johnson scored to seize back the lead. Kiser then tied the game with a layup, but Mackenzie King scored. Flowers made a layup and
Nakia Weston made a shot of her own before Ross finished the period with three points to give UVA Wise a slim one point lead.
Vanzant and Johnson opened the scoring in the third quarter to stake the Cavs to a five point lead, but Kuehne closed the gap with a three. Vanzant responded with a long ball of her own before Proffitt, Kuehne, and Kirkpatrick tied the score. UVA Wise responded quickly as they scored six consecutive points to extend their lead out. Three more points by Ada Stanley gave the Cavs their largest lead of the game at nine before Kuehne stopped the bleeding with a jumper. Stanley scored again, but Flowers responded. Vanzant and Stanley gave the Cavs their first double-digit lead of the contest at 65-54. Kuehne continued her excellent performance and connected from deep, but Crawford scored inside once again. Kuehne and Johnson then traded points as UVA Wise went into the final period up 10.
Oliver quickly extended the lead just 12 seconds into the final stanza as she made a three, but Kuehne responded with free throws. King and Kiser traded shots before three more points by King gave UVA Wise their largest lead of the contest at 13. LMU did not back down at all as they went on a huge run over the next few minutes. A Flowers free throw and a Kiser bucket cut the lead to 10; then Proffitt and Flowers scored to slash the lead to six with four minutes to play. After a Kuehne steal, Maney scored and Kuehne made a three to cut the lead to one. Maney then went 1-2 from the line to tie the game with two and a half minutes to play. However, the Cavaliers went on a 10-2 run to close out the game as they hit several free throws down the stretch.
Kuehne led the charge off the bench with a season-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds in her finest performance in the Blue and Gray thus far, while Flowers had 16 points and five rebounds. Proffitt had 14 points and a season-high tying eight rebounds and Kiser had ten points and five rebounds.
LMU will have a quick turnaround as they face league-leading Carson-Newman at home Wednesday evening. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
