HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team (3-2, 2-2 South Atlantic Conference) showed a significant amount of rust coming off a 35-day break from competition, falling to Anderson (6-3, 5-2) 54-32.
The game got off to a very slow start as neither team scored for nearly four minutes. The Trojans broke the drought with an Alexis Tate layup, but transfer
Mikayla Kuehne hit the Lady Railsplitters' only three point basket of the day. Kuehne transferred to LMU from Eckerd College and was playing in her first game in a Railsplitter uniform.Â
Baskets by Jalyn Spurlin and Taylor Hair gave Anderson a three point lead, but after a free throw, a
Lindsay Proffitt jumper cut the lead to two. Four points by Britney Bailey and another layup from Hair extended the lead to eight points before an
Addi Kirkpatrick free throw provided a seven point margin after one quarter.
A J'Mya Cutter three pointer gave the Trojans their first double digit lead of the game before a Kirkpatrick layup and a Flowers jumper cut it back to six. McKenzie Gadson made a short jumper, but four points from Kuehne slashed into the lead once again. Spurlin scored once again, but a basket and four combined free throws by
Nakia Weston and
Kassidy Kenny tied the game. Samantha Michel then hit a jumper to give Anderson the halftime lead.
The teams traded baskets before Anderson went on an 8-0 run to lead by 10. After an LMU timeout, the teams traded points again before the Trojans scored six straight points to close out the third quarter and lead by 16.Â
Consecutive baskets by Kirkpatrick and Weston cut the lead to 12; then the teams traded baskets and Gadson hit two free throws before both teams went on a long scoring drought. The Trojans scored the next four baskets in a one and a half minute span before Weston hit two free throws. Britney Bailey made a layup to provide the final margin.
Kuehne and Weston led the scoring charge with seven points each while Proffitt and Kirkpatrick held down the fort on the boards as they each pulled down five.Â
The Lady Railsplitters will look to bounce back this weekend as they take on Lenoir-Rhyne on the road on Saturday, January 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
