HARROGATE, TENN. – It's always an exciting day when you get to honor your seniors who have given so much to the program, and it's even more exciting when you can honor them with a win in their final home match. That's exactly what the Lincoln Memorial men's soccer team did today as they beat third place Anderson 3-2 in double overtime this afternoon.
Peter Majer scored the game-winning goal in the 104
th minute to secure the victory for the Railsplitters. This was the fifth overtime game for LMU this season, and the first one they were able to come out victorious.
Anderson got the scoring going early in the first half, as they found the back of the net in the 2
nd minute to take the lead.
Diego Alvarado would respond just two minutes later as he scored to tie the game. The Railsplitters would add on from there as Alvardo found freshman
Arkin Ulusoy who connected on his team leading sixth goal of the year in the 27
th minute to give LMU a 2-1 lead that they would hold into the half.
The Trojans would fight back and tied the game at two in the 57
th minute, a score that would carry over into the overtime periods.
Things got dicey at the end of the second half as the Trojans put a shot on goal in the final seconds, but were turned away by goalkeeper
Jackson Jalovec and sent the game into extra time. The Trojans again threatened in the first overtime period, but Jalovec again turned them away and gave his offense a chance to end the game, which is exactly what Majer did early in the second overtime period.
The Railsplitters were in attack mode the entire second overtime period, and they got their chance off a corner kick as
Jacob Agazzi attacked into the box and found Majer who buried his first goal of the year past the Anderson keeper.
The victory marked the first for recently appointed interim head coach
Travis Cooke, and the excitement was undeniable from both him and his squad, as they rushed the field to mob Majer shortly after the goal was scored.
The senior Jalovec was good in net again for the Railsplitters, as he saved five shots, and picked up his second career win as he shut down the Trojans for the last 47 minutes of the game.
The offensive output has been a developing trend the last three games for the Railsplitters, as the Splitters have found the back of the net 10 times in that time span. Alvarado and Ulusoy have been the leaders in the offensive charge, as Alvarado has accounted for 10 points in those games, while Ulusoy has scored a goal in each of the three games.
Before the game, four Railsplitters took part in Senior Day. Midfielders
Omar Ayala,
Pedro Da Silva,
Kurtis Orrson and the winning goalkeeper from today
Jackson Jalovec all were honored for their achievements since arriving in Harrogate. The quartet was able to end their careers with another home victory.
