Harrogate, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University women's soccer team battled against one of the top teams in the nation Wednesday afternoon in their return to campus, falling against the No. 2 ranked Columbus State Cougars 3-0 in the season's final non-conference matchup.
The Lady Railsplitters faired well for themselves against one of the premier sides in the country in DII, only going down to the break 1-0 off a fortunate deflection corner for Columbus State.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Isabelle Zukaitis and red-shirt sophomore center back
Megan Snider were two bright spots for LMU all afternoon long. Zukaitis kept the Lady Railsplitters in the contest on many occasions, including a clutch double-save in the first half to deny the Cougars of an opener.
Megan Snider also played well at the back Wednesday against No. 2 Columbus State, leaving the Cougars scratching their heads for much of the first hour of play.
Columbus State gained breathing room with 20 minutes remaining in the affair, as a well-whipped in cross found its way into the top corner for another, out-of-nowhere finish for the Cougars. Having gained the match's momentum after going 2-nil up, the No. 2 ranked side killed the game off in the final minute, finding the back of the net once more for a 3-0 victory.
The Lady Railsplitters turn their attention to face the six final South Atlantic Conference fixtures of the 2021 fall campaign this Saturday against Wingate. LMU still sit well in fourth-place of the conference standings, level on 12 points with Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba, only trailing the league leaders of Queens (15 points). The Blue & Grey bolster an impressive 6-2-1 record in all competitions this season.
