Late Comeback Not Enough As Lady Railsplitters Fall To Newberry

Outscore Wolves over final three quarters in single-digit loss

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Despite mounting a late comeback and getting within one point on numerous occasions, the Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team (7-8, 6-8 South Atlantic Conference) fell to Newberry 64-55 in a road contest Saturday afternoon.

The two middle quarters were excellent for the Lady Railsplitters as they outscored Newberry 30-23. Jumpers by Lindsay Proffitt and Lauren Flowers closed the gap to 12 points, and Flowers drew LMU one point closer with a free throw. The Lady Railsplitters then got within single digits on another Proffitt jumper. A Maggie Jachimczuk bucket closed LMU within seven, but Courtney Virgo scored to close out the half and give Newberry a 31-22 halftime lead.

The Wolves scored the first two baskets of the second half to distance themselves, but LMU struck back. Proffitt's three pointer kept the Lady Railsplitters within ten, and after trading scores numerous times, a Jordan Maney three cut the lead to nine. Later, a Maney free throw, a Jachimczuk basket, and another Maney jumper reduced the margin to six points as the final stanza was about to begin.

Earlier in the contest, a three-point barrage in the opening period gave Newberry all the early momentum. Although Mikayla Kuehne opened the scoring with a trey, she was quickly matched by Kelsey Brett. Another Brett score, a Mylaysia Gates layup, and threes from Virgo and Payton Cronen extended the lead to double digits just seven minutes into the contest. One more long ball each by Virgo and Cronen ended the quarter and led the Wolves to a 22-9 lead.

The intense fourth quarter saw the momentum seized by each team at various times. Jachimczuk and Flowers closed the lead to one possession just a minute into the period, setting up a back and forth battle from there on. The margin stayed at two when Lexi Kiser made two of three from the line, but Newberry responded with consecutive makes to take the lead back to six points. Kiser's three and another Proffitt basket slashed the lead to one point, but the Lady Railsplitters would get no closer. Brett and Maney traded three pointers; however, LMU was unable to score and the Wolves closed out the game on an 8-0 run.

Making her first appearance since December 1, Jachimczuk led the scoring charge off the bench with 15 points and four rebounds. Maney joined her in double figures with 11 points, while Kiser and Proffitt each had nine. Flowers stuffed the stat sheet once again with eight points, eight rebounds, and six assists, the latter two of which led the team.

LMU will look to bounce back as they travel to Tusculum on February 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
