JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team (8-10, 7-10 South Atlantic Conference) struggled shooting and fell to Carson-Newman (15-2, 15-2) 87-46 inside Holt Fieldhouse Wednesday evening.
After an Eagle basket,
Jordan Maney made a three pointer to give LMU a one point lead. Consecutive baskets by Carson-Newman gave them a three point lead before a
Lauren Flowers layup. Four more Eagle points, including a three pointer by Braelyn Wykle, gave Carson-Newman a five point lead before a
Maggie Jachimczuk layup sliced the lead to three. The teams then see-sawed back and forth for a few minutes before the Eagles took a six point lead into the second period.
Carson-Newman played stifling defense in the second period as the Lady Railsplitters were unable to get anything going. An 11-0 Eagle run extended the lead to 32-16, and LMU was unable to do much the rest of the half. Holding the Lady Railsplitters to five points on 2-13 shooting in the quarter, Carson-Newman scored nine of the final 12 points to take a 38-19 lead into the locker room while shooting over 50 percent from the field.
Although the Lady Railsplitters fought back early, they were unable to get the lead much under twenty points. A Lindsey Taylor layup halfway through the quarter ballooned the lead to 52-26, and the lead only increased for the rest of the period. Scoring 17 of the next 24 points, the Eagles extended their lead to 36 points at 69-33 and cruised to the end of the period.
Three consecutive baskets by Carson-Newman gave the Eagles an astonishing 42 point lead with eight minutes to play. The Lady Railsplitters never gave up as they outscored Carson-Newman 13-10 down the stretch, but the game had already been more than decided.
Grace Day scored the final basket of the game with two minutes to play, and the clock wound down with neither team able to produce any more offense.
The Lady Railsplitters shot just 35 percent from the field in defeat. Flowers led the scoring charge with 13 points and seven rebounds, while five other players scored between five and nine points.
LMU will now await their seeding in the 2021 South Atlantic Conference Pilot Flying J Women's Basketball Championship.
