WISE, Va. - On the road for their second straight South Atlantic Conference matches, the Lincoln Memorial University men's and women's tennis teams swept UVA Wise Tuesday afternoon in dominant fashion, with the men winning 7-0 and the women triumphing 6-1. With the wins, the men improve to 5-7 (4-4 South Atlantic Conference) and the women are now 6-5 (5-3).
On the men's side, the Railsplitters swept the doubles point easily with
Iker Moure and
Sebastian Colla winning 6-2 at number one,
Thom Hermans and
Jake Tuchmann winning 6-1 at number two, and freshmen
Thomas Turner and
Luca Pavan defeating their opponents 6-0 at number three to continue their impressive late-season streak. The easy wins gave LMU the early 1-0 lead, and they never looked back.
No singles match took longer than the required two sets as Moure won 6-3, 6-2 at number one and
Fabian Sjokvist won 6-0, 6-3 at number two. Tuchmann was clinical in his 6-0, 6-0 victory at number three and Herman was nearly the same in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number four. Pavan also continued his strong play of late at number five with a 6-0, 6-0 win and Turner won 8-2 in a pro set at the number six position.
The women also swept the doubles portion of the proceedings with
Valentina Ascarrunz and
Kristin Vogel winning 6-2 at number one and
Amanda Dahlstrom and
Mae Fitzgerald cruising to a 6-1 victory at number two. LMU won at number three in a walkover.
Ascarrunz defeated her opponent 8-3 in a pro set at number two singles to continue her recent winning streak, while Dahlstrom was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at number three. Fitzgerald also had an 8-0 pro set victory with
Claudie Quinn posting a 6-0, 6-0 win at the number five spot. Once again, the final spot was in LMU's favor in a walkover.
The teams will look to continue their recent winning ways as they host nationally-ranked Queens at the LMU Tennis Complex this Sunday, Mar. 28. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
