Men's And Women's Tennis Split With Newberry

Men post dominant 7-0 victory while women lose 5-2

HARROGATE, Tenn. - In their final regular season matches of 2021, the Lincoln Memorial University men's and women's tennis teams split with Newberry at the LMU Tennis Complex Sunday afternoon. With their 7-0 victory, the men improve to 7-9 (6-6 South Atlantic Conference) while the women's 5-2 loss drops them to 6-6 (5-4 SAC).

On the men's side, Iker Moure and Jake Tuchmann improved to 3-0 this season with a 7-5 win at number one whlie Fabian Sjokvist and Sebastian Colla won 7-5 at number two. Thomas Turner and Luca Pavan also continued their excellent play with a clinical 6-2 victory. In singles, Moure won 6-1, 6-1 while Sjokvist was victorious by a 6-4, 7-6 ledger and Colla won 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 to complete the results at the top three positions. Tuchmann's 6-1, 6-1 victory, Thom Hermans' 6-0, 6-3 win and Pavan's 6-4, 6-1 triumph finished out the shutout victory.

"The men's match had a few moments where it tightened up," head coach Marc Walters said. "After the doubles point, we relaxed and played our game. Jake and Iker both closed out their careers here on a high note and added more wins to their respective resumes."

The women's tough day did see some positives as Julia Valls and Claudie Quinn notched wins in singles while the duo of Kristin Vogel and Mae Fitzgerald posted a 6-3 victory at the number two doubles slot.

"I was extremely impressed with our women today," Walters continued. "They had a difficult draw, playing a good Newberry squad without several key players. The younger ones stepped up in a high-stress situation, and that's all you can ask for."

Both teams have advanced to the South Atlantic Conference postseason and now await their official seeding and pairings for the tournament, which is slated to begin Thursday, Apr. 15 in Sumter, S.C.
