Brings seven years of experience to LMU

Harrogate, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial Athletic Department has announced the hiring of Will McFarland for the position of Director of Athletic Communications. McFarland joins the Railsplitters after spending nearly two years as the Assistant Director of Media Relations at Lamar University in Texas and brings over seven years of experience working in college athletics. In his role, he will oversee the athletic communications department, and serve as the primary contact for women's volleyball, men's basketball, beach volleyball, and baseball.

"Will comes to LMU with a tremendous passion for college athletics. His experience and overall skill set will undoubtedly enhance the communication strategies and promotion of our 25 athletic teams," stated Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations Cameron Whicker. "I am excited about the value he will bring to the Athletic Communications staff as we strive to deliver a first class student-athlete experience."

In his tenure at Lamar, McFarland served as the primary contact for soccer, women's basketball, softball, men's and women's golf, cross country, and track and field. He was responsible for creating social media campaigns for marketing initiatives for game advertisements and season ticket sales. He was also vital in carrying out the communications strategy for the sports programs. Those details included creating pregame and postgame articles, media guides, games notes for every event. He also wrote feature stories for significant events that happened in Lamar Athletics.

Before working at Lamar, McFarland was a media relations student assistant at the University of Tennessee. He worked as the secondary contact for baseball and volleyball and oversaw the statistical operations for both sports. He managed two volleyball tournaments and distributed stats and team information to media outlets and the coaching staffs. McFarland also was responsible for performing coach's interviews and releasing articles and press releases for baseball and volleyball.

During his time at Tennessee, he also worked as a media relations assistant for the Southeastern Conference. McFarland was responsible for helping put on events such as SEC football media days, the SEC men's basketball tournament, and the SEC football championship game. At those events, he would stat games, provide media coverage, create game notes and other necessary information for media members or scouts.

While in his time at Tennessee, McFarland was also responsible for helping out with various NCAA tournament events in Knoxville and surrounding southern cities. He worked multiple Knoxville NCAA softball regionals, the Knoxville regional of the 2018 NCAA women's basketball tournament, and the 2019 Columbia regional of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

McFarland started his collegiate journey at Asbury University in Wilmore, Ky., where he was a member of the men's lacrosse program for a year before heading down to Knoxville. While at Asbury, he helped run the stats programs for volleyball and basketball and helped with game-day operations.

During his time as Asbury, McFarland also started working for Scorer's Table as a sports statistician, a role in which he would travel to different NCAA events to run stats for those schools. He still works for the company in a consulting role.

McFarland graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in communications with a journalism and electronic media major.
