NEWBERRY, S.C. – The offense finally was able to find the back of the net, but the defense was unable to hold the lead as Lincoln Memorial men's soccer fell on the road at Newberry 3-2 in overtime.
The Railsplitters got the scoring going late in the first half as
Timmy Townsend scored on a rebound off a
Will Arrowood shot. Townsend's goal was one of the four LMU shots on goal, and they put up eight total shots as well.
The defense held strong in the first half, as the staved off eight Wolves shots, as goalkeeper
Robin Hermann saved two shots in the first 45 minutes.
The second half started strong for Lincoln Memorial as well, as defender
Lars Popp headed in a corner kick attempt by
Peter Majer to put the Railsplitters up 2-0. LMU attempted seven shots in the second half, including five on goal.
Newberry was able to get back in the game late in the second half, as they were able to get a goal in the 76
th minute to cut the LMU lead in half. Ten minutes later the Wolves tied the game up off a rebound attempt from a
Robin Hermann save.
Hermann stopped five more shots in the second half, including two in the last three minutes to keep the game tied and sent it to overtime.
In overtime, Newberry was able to keep their momentum going as they scored the golden goal in the 94
th minute to end the match.
The junior Hermann was again very good in the net saving seven shots, and held off 19 of the Wolves 22 total shots.
Shanden Vergara led the Railsplitter attack, attempting five shots, and putting three shots on goal to go along with the goals from Townsend and Popp.
