HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial women's volleyball team fell in three sets (25-20, 25-17, 25-19) to Mars Hill on Tuesday night at Mary Mars Gym. The Railsplitters (6-16, 4-10 South Atlantic Conference) got double-digit point totals from
Gabriela Abreu,
Kristen Moehring and
Maggie Sanderson but couldn't tame the Lions (15-3, 10-3 SAC).
Set 1: Mars Hill 25-20
The most competitive frame of the night featuring five ties and two lead changes, the Railsplitters got out to an early 9-2 lead thanks to a 7-0 scoring run on
Katherine Bedel's serve, with Abreu putting down four kills during the streak. The Lions would take 6 of 7 points to get within two points at 10-8 before steadily fighting back until a 3-0 run gave them the lead at 17-16. Mars Hill scored the final four points of the set to clinch it. Abreu's five kills and Moehring's six digs paced the Railsplitter offense and defense, respectively, in the opening period.
Set 2: Mars Hill 25-17
Mars Hill never trailed in the set, slowly but surely building a comfortable lead of 10 at the most at 19-9. Abreu again led Lincoln Memorial in kills in the second frame, this time with four.
Set 3: Mars Hill 25-19
A 3-0 run including back-to-back Moehring kills put the hosts ahead 4-3 early, but the Lions responded with an 8-0 streak to create separation at 11-4. The Railsplitters steadily rallied back until a Moehring kill followed by an ace by
Abigail Kesler got them to within two points at 20-18, but Mars Hill took 5 of 6 points to clinch the set and match. Both Moehring and Sanderson put down four kills in the final frame, while
MJ Trujillo collected eight digs.
