Box Score 2 The Lincoln Memorial University tennis programs split a pair of matches Friday evening with the University of Charleston (WV) at the tennis indoor center.
The LMU men's program were beaten 6-1 by the Golden Eagles in their season opener, while the Lady Railsplitters came back from a big deficit to win 4-3. The women raised their record to 2-1 on the spring.
Both UC teams came into the season after finishing in the national rankings, with the women at #29 and the men at #43.
In the men's match, Luca Paven scored the sole singles win for the 'Splitters. UC dominated the doubles and except for a brief scare from senior Fabian Sjökvist who lost in a tense third set match tie-break, the Golden Eagles (1-0) dominated from start to finish.
The women's match could have been the same story, with UC quickly taking the doubles point, followed by wins at #1 and #3 spots. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Railsplitters rattled of first straight singles wins to take the match.
Amanda Dahlstrom got LMU on the board at #5 spot with a 63 62 win, and then
Valentina Ascarrunz,
Sophia Aray, and
Kushi Khandoji all won in straight sets to complete the comeback.
Khandoji clinched the win with her 76 (2) , 61 win at #6 to see her spring record rise to 3-0.
LMU is back in action on Sunday as they host Young Harris College at 10am in the TIC.
