Men's Tennis Falls to Belmont Abbey

Box Score HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial University men's tennis team dropped a match to visiting Belmont Abbey by the score of 7-0 Thursday afternoon at the Tennis Indoor Center.

The Crusaders lost just two sets in the singles and won 5 of the 7 tiebreakers on the day to sweep. Except for a 7-6 (7-3) win at third doubles by Tom Hermans and Harper Mills, LMU (2-4) couldn't break through and dent the scoreboard.

"We aren't playing big points with focus and purpose, which is part of the growing pains with a young team," said coach Mark Walters about his teams' struggles in close matches. "We put three freshmen and three sophomores out there today and it showed when we had opportunities. Every time we had a chance to put together some momentum (Belmont Abbey) would toughen up and keep their foot on us."

In addition to their doubles win, Hermans and Mills each split sets before falling in super tiebreakers.  William Jonsson also competed very well before falling in two tiebreakers, 6-7 (4), 6-7 (4).

The Railsplitters are back on the court Saturday morning at 8:30am against Bluefield State (WV) with both the men and women. The LMU men also play against WV State University at 12:30pm Saturday, all in the Tennis Indoor Center.

LMU split with Bluefield State (WV) last season, with the women winning 7-0, and the Men dropping a 1-6 decision.
