MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball program dropped a midweek affair in non-conference action to Mars Hill on Wednesday afternoon by a score of 6-3.
The Railsplitters were able to get one on early, but the Lion pitcher was able to force quick work of the Blue and Gray offense before the Lions were able to get two runners on in two hits before a three-run home run before the end of the inning gave Mars Hill a 3-0 lead.
Lincoln Memorial was able to get the offense going in the second as
Sam Mast was walked in the first appearance of the inning. Mast was able to get into scoring position before a single by
Cameron Powser gave LMU runners on the corners. A sacrifice fly from
Andrew Keene allowed Mast to tag up and head home, cutting the Lion lead to 3-1.
Mars Hill then saw their lead rise in the bottom of the second after producing a two-run inning behind a couple of critical Railsplitter errors before the Blue and Gray defense locked down and was able to get out of the inning.
The Railsplitters were able to get going again in the third after a
Chris Hall single to start the inning. Getting the steal to second, Hall put himself into scoring position before a triple from
Ryan Kurth gave LMU another run and Kurth on third. Mars Hill tacked onto their lead in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly to right field, making it 6-3 MHU.
Lincoln Memorial was able to get one on base in the fourth, but defense and pitching became the tale over the course of the fourth through eighth as just one run combined from both programs was tallied as the Railsplitters notched one in the fifth on a double from Kurth to make the Mars Hill lead, 6-3.
The Railsplitter offense came alive in the ninth as Lincoln Memorial started the inning off with a single through the left side from Keene before
Collin Goda was able to knock down the single to center, giving LMU two runners on.
Cameron Bowen evened things up with a three-run blast over the left field wall, making the score 6-all.
Mast began the tenth with a double to center before
Austin Cole came into pinch run for the 'Splitters.
Kasten Harvey was then walked before both him and Cole double stole to give LMU runners in scoring position. A routine RBI single for
Andrew Keene allowed the Railsplitters to take their first lead of the afternoon, 8-6. Lincoln Memorial pushed their lead by one to 9-6 before the Lion defense was able to get out of the jam.
It did not matter as the Railsplitters were able to hold the Lion attack at bay as they completed the comeback over Mars Hill, 9-6, in ten innings.
