Women's Volleyball's Comeback Attempt Falls Short vs Carson-Newman

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial women's volleyball team made a comeback effort, but fell in three sets (25-20, 25-11, 17-25, 26-24) to rival Carson-Newman on Tuesday night at Mars Gymnasium. The Railsplitters (2-7, 0-1 South Atlantic Conference) took the third before the Eagles (8-2, 2-0 SAC) won the frenzied final frame.

Set 1: Carson-Newman 25-20
After the Eagles got out to an early 11-6 advantage, Lincoln Memorial stormed back with a 5-0 run, highlighted by kills from Ketura Margaret and Maggie Sanderson, to tie it. The Railsplitters would later take the lead on an ace by MJ Trujillo, but Carson-Newman would take 10 of the final 13 points following another kill from Margaret to take the opening frame. Margaret, Sanderson, Sierrah Lemons and Abigail Kesler all had multiple kills in the first set.

Set 2: Carson-Newman 25-11
Carson-Newman started out hot, leading 9-2 early, and it would maintain at least a five-point advantage the rest of the way. Sanderson's two kills paced the Railsplitter offense in the second frame.

Set 3: Lincoln Memorial 25-17
Two Kesler kills helped the Railsplitters lead 4-1 early. A later 8-1 Lincoln Memorial run, consisting of four kills from Margaret, extended the Railsplitter advantage to six at 14-8. The Railsplitters held a steady lead the rest of the way, clinching the set on a kill from Margaret, who tallied seven of them in the third frame.

Set 4: Carson-Newman 26-24
Kills from three different Railsplitters led Lincoln Memorial to a 4-2 lead. A later 5-0 run for the Eagles put them up 18-14, but the Railsplitters rallied back, taking a 22-21 lead on Kristen Moehring's kill. The Eagles won 5 of the final 7 points to clinch the set and the match. Moehring and Sanderson contributed two kills each to the Lincoln Memorial offense in the fourth frame.
