Men's Volleyball Falls to CSUN in Final Match of Asics Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Lincoln Memorial men's volleyball team dropped its final match of a west coast roadswing in three sets to CSUN (25-20, 25-21, 25-21) on Saturday at the Asics Invitational. The Railsplitters finished the opening week 1-3 while beating No. 7 UC Santa Barbara on Friday.

Set 1: CSUN 25-20
Lincoln Memorial's 4-0 scoring run gave the Railsplitters a 10-4 lead, but CSUN responded by scoring 12 of the next 14 points to gain a 16-12 advantage, and the Matadors would lead by at least two points the rest of the way while clinching the set on a Kyle Hobus kill. Matthew Gentry's three kills paced the Lincoln Memorial offense in the first frame.

Set 2: CSUN 25-21
Johan Negron's early kill followed by back-to-back aces put the Railsplitters ahead 3-1, and they would lead 7-3 following an ace from Gentry. The Matadors controlled the action for most of the remainder of the period, building a 20-16 lead and cruising to victory from there. Gentry and Cole Campisano put up a pair of kills each in the second frame for the Railsplitters.

Set 3: CSUN 25-21
Back-to-back kills by Gentry and Justin Sharfenaker tied the score at 13-13 after the Matadors had led by three points earlier at 7-4. However, CSUN soon after went on a 5-0 scoring streak to give it a 21-15 lead, and the match and set would be clinched on Nathan Merren's kill. Sharfenaker posted six kills in the final frame.
