Men's basketball defeats No.8 UNC-Pembroke in home opener

Harrogate, TN - The Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team opened its home slate on Friday night against eighth ranked UNC-Pembroke. The teams battled back-and-forth all night, but in the end, the Railsplitters were too much for the Braves, taking a 71-69 victory, improving to 2-1 on the season.

Lincoln Memorial's defense limited UNC-Pembroke to just 11% from long range in the first half en route to holding a 32-27 advantage at the half. The Railsplitters shot well in the front end, connecting on 44% of their baskets from the floor, including a 40% mark from long range, and a 75% clip from the charity stripe.

The Braves came out fast in the second half, gaining their first lead of the game just minutes into the back half. However, Lincoln Memorial never allowed UNC-Pembroke to separate. Late in the game, with the Braves holding the lead, Me'Kell Burries drove to the cup and finished a layup through contact. He followed with a free throw to tie the game at 67-67 with just under two minutes remaining. The Railsplitters regained the lead and held on through the last possession, securing a 71-69 victory in a home opening thriller.

Me'Kell Burries led Lincoln Memorial in scoring with 21 points. He was followed by Chase Rankin who tallied 16 points and four assists. Matthew Sells followed with 11 points. Martez Brown was the only other Railsplitter in double digit scoring with 10 points. He also added seven boards. Osmar Garcia-Araujo added eight points, four rebounds, and three assists. Thomas Allard chipped in three and Jordan Walters added two to round out scoring for Lincoln Memorial.

The Railsplitters will be back in action on Nov. 17th on the road against Alabama-Huntsville. Tip off is slated for 8:30pm in Huntsville, AL.
