Dahlonega, GA – LMU Women's Basketball dropped their first game of the season to North Georgia, 58-56. The game was LMU's second at the UNG Nighthawk Classic.
Alexa Smiddy led LMU in scoring with 19 points followed by Geo Rios and
Jordan Maney scoring 11 each. Rios had 15 rebounds.
Jazzmen Robinson had 9 rebounds to go with her eight points. LMU outrebounded UNG 50-36.
UNG's Emily Trushel led all scorers with 25 and had eight rebounds.
UNG started the game with an 8-0 lead until
Alexa Smiddy dropped in a 3-pointer to stop the run. The Nighthawks stretched their lead to 12 by the end of the first quarter, 19-7.
Jazzmen Robinson scored LMU's next eight points to cut the UNG lead to seven, 22-15. Three-pointers by Smiddy and
Lauren Flowers closed the gap to four, with 4:36 to go in the first half, 25-21. Baskets by Rios and
Jordan Maney kept the halftime deficit at seven, 32-25.
Some fastbreak points to start the third quarter by Smiddy and Rios and points in the paint by Maney and 3-pointers by Smiddy helped tie the game at 34 at the 7:54 mark. A couple more baskets in the paint by Maney, a 3-pointer by
Matty Tanner, plus some free throws had LMU within one at the end of the third quarter, 47-46.
It was a low scoring fourth quarter as a Smiddy layup gave LMU its first lead at 48-47. UNG came right back with a three and took back the lead. UNG pulled ahead by four with 3:33 left in the game. A Smiddy layup and two Rios free-throws tied the game at 56-56 with 1:18 left on the clock. A foul by LMU with two seconds left gave UNG two free-throws to go up by two with two seconds to go, 58-56, to end the game.
LMU will go the Cookeville, TN, next for a scrimmage against Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, November 29.
