Men's basketball falls on the road to #24 West Alabama

Livingston, AL - Two days after downing #23 Alabama-Huntsville in the Bill Penney Crossover Classic in Huntsville, the Lincoln Memorial men's basketball team fell on the road against #24 West Alabama on Sunday.

Lincoln Memorial connected on 48% of its attempts in the first half, while limiting West Alabama to just 29% from the floor. Both rebounding and shooting percentage favored the Railsplitters in the first half. However, second chance points and forced turnovers allowed the Tigers to stay within striking distance, trailing by only two at the half, 35-33.

Lincoln Memorial began the second half on a 4-0 run before West Alabama answered with a pair of three pointers to knot the score at 39-39 just minutes into the second half. Turnovers continued to mar the Railsplitters as the Tigers took their first lead of the second half on a takeaway, 41-39. Behind a 15-8 run, West Alabama's lead grew to its largest of the day (9 points) with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game, 56-47. Lincoln Memorial began to chip away at the West Alabama lead, drawing back to within five points at 56-51 with under nine minutes remaining in regulation.A pair of free throws from Khalid Gates drew the Railsplitters back to within one possession, 56-53 with just over eight minutes left in the game.

The teams traded buckets over the course of the next two minutes, seeing West Alabama maintain a 61-57 advantage with under five minutes left in regulation. With time dwindling, the Tigers turned up the intensity and eventually worked out to a 65-60 lead with under four minutes remaining. Lincoln Memorial increased the offensive pace in the final minutes, cutting the score back to within three points at 65-62 by the final media timeout. A pair of free throws by Matthew Sells pulled the Railsplitters back to within one point, 65-64, with 2:30 remaining in the game. With 1:13 left in the game, Lincoln Memorial's leading scorer for the game, Jay Boyd, was called for an offensive foul and fouled-out of the game. On the ensuing possession for West Alabama, Martez Brown was called for a foul, allowing the Tigers to step to the line in an attempt to build on their lead. Connecting on one of two free throws, West Alabama's lead grew to 66-64 with :30 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Brown was called for another foul. much to the displeasure of Lincoln Memorial head coach Jeremiah Sammarripas, who voiced his frustrations with the officials, and was assessed a technical foul. The Tigers made the most of the opportunity, connecting on both free throw attempts to build a four point cushion at 68-64 with under :30 seconds remaining.

Unable to find a high quality shots in the final seconds, West Alabama was able to secure crucial rebounds and connect on critical free throws to secure victory over Lincoln Memorial, 75-64. With the loss, the Railsplitters fall to 3-2 on the season. Lincoln Memorial will be back in action against King University on Nov. 25th in Bristol, TN with tip off slated for 4:00pm.

Lincoln Memorial was marred by turnovers, tallying 21 for the game. 32 points of West Alabama's 75 total points came off of turnovers. The Railsplitters posted a 48% mark shooting from the floor in the first half, but cooled off in the second half, connecting on only 36% of shot attempts from the floor in the back end of the game.

Jay Boyd led the Railsplitters in scoring with 21 points, connecting on 80% of his shots from the floor. He was followed by Matthew Sells with 10 points.Khalid Gates chipped in eight points, Chase Rankin added six points, Jordan Walters pitched in five points, Martez Brown, Me'Kell Burries, and Osmar Garcia-Araujo added four points each, and Elijah Bredwood added two points to round out scoring for Lincoln Memorial.
