HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial baseball team beat Lander 4-1 Friday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field with the help of homeruns by
Gavin Whitehurst and
Ryan Kurth in the later innings.
The visiting Bearcats (1-3) got on the board first with a leadoff shot from left fielder Will McClellan, but Lincoln Memorial starting pitcher
Patrick Queener would quickly settle down, allowing only the 1 run while scattering 5 hits across 7 innings of work to pick up the win.
The Railsplitters knotted the score at 1-1 with a sac fly from Whitehurst that scored
Ryan Kurth. Two innings later, Whitehurst unloaded a 2-run bomb to right center for the game-winning RBI. Kurth added an insurance run with a solo shot to left center in the 8
th inning.
David Brian Ellison collected the save for Lincoln Memorial after working the last two scoreless innings, while Lander's Nick Foray was tagged for the loss, giving up 3 runs in 5.2 innings pitched.
Lincoln Memorial and Lander will play two on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in a series that was shifted from South Carolina to Harrogate just two days ago due to impending weather.
