WINGATE, N.C. – The Lincoln Memorial baseball team split a doubleheader at Wingate's Ron Christopher Field on Saturday to salvage the series with the Bulldogs.
The Railsplitters (13-6, 2-4 South Atlantic Conference) won the opener 3-2 before dropping a 7-inning Game 2 by the same score to wrap up the series against Wingate (15-8, 5-4 SAC).
Game 1: Lincoln Memorial 3, Wingate 2
Tucker Hagan took an RBI walk before
Collin Goda hit a sacrifice fly to get Lincoln Memorial on the board in the 2
nd inning. Wingate responded with 2 runs of its own in the 3
rd, but Hagan hit another sacrifice fly in the 4
th inning, scoring
Gavin Whitehurst that proved to be the winning run.
Ethan Bobo (2-0) threw 6.0 innings of 2-run ball while striking out 8 to claim the win for the Railsplitters, while
Will Shelton pitched scoreless 7
th and 8
th innings before
David Brian Ellison struck out a pair of Bulldogs in a scoreless 9
th for save No. 2 for him this year. Both Goda and
Kasten Harvey had a pair of hits each for the Lincoln Memorial offense.
The Railsplitters got their 3 runs on 9 hits and committed 1 error, while Wingate had their 2 runs on 6 hits with no errors. Austin Mitchell (2-2) was hit with the loss for the Bulldogs after surrendering 3 runs in 4.2 innings.
Game 2: Wingate 3, Lincoln Memorial 2
Lincoln Memorial took a short-lived lead after
Cameron Powser and
Cameron Bowen RBI singles in the Top of the 4
th, but the host Bulldogs scored single tallies in the 3
rd, 4
th and 6
th innings for a 3-2 lead.
Wingate's Mitch Farris's solo homerun to right field in the 6
th inning provided the winning run. Cal Riehl (2-0) picked up the win with 3.0 inning of shutout ball in relief, and
Eli Edds (2-2) took the loss after allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in a complete game effort.
