No. 1 Seed Newberry Beats @LMUbaseball to Win SAC Tournament

KODAK, Tenn. – The Lincoln Memorial baseball team fell twice to No. 1 seed Newberry on Monday at Smokies Stadium, as the Wolves won the South Atlantic Conference Tournament championship series by taking the final pair of games in the best-of-3 series.

The No. 6 seed Railsplitters (31-18) won 11-5 Sunday night and had a chance to close it out in the 1st game of the day, but the No. 10 nationally ranked Wolves scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the 9th inning to break a 4-4 tie.

Game 1: Newberry 5, Lincoln Memorial 4

Lincoln Memorial came back from a 3-0 deficit after the 2nd inning and a 4-3 disadvantage going into the 7th inning, but the Wolves never trailed to tie the series at 1-1.

After Newberry scored 3 runs in the 2nd, Carson Boles hit an RBI single in the 3rd before a Collin Goda sac fly and a bases loaded walk by Cameron Bowen in the 4th tied the score at 3-all. Kasten Harvey nailed a game-tying solo homerun in the 7th inning, but Kade Faircloth scored the game-winning run for the Wolves in the final inning.

Newberry's Trevor Linaman (3-0) got the win thanks to 2.0 shutout innings in relief, while Colin Murphy (3-2) allowed 1 run (0 earned) in 3.1 innings to be hit with the loss.

Game 2: Newberry 8, Lincoln Memorial 4

Newberry got out to an early 5-0 lead, and the Railsplitters could never come back as the Wolves clinched the SAC Tournament title.

Mitch Petzelt hit an RBI single in the 4th and a solo homer in the 6th following Ryan Kurth's 2-run shot to get Lincoln Memorial back to within 2 runs at 6-4, but the Wolves tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the 8th to close out the victory.

Tyler Chinpire (7-0) picked up the win with 6.0 innings of 4-run ball, while Lincoln Memorial starter Eli Edds (6-4) threw 3.0 innings allowing 5 runs to suffer the losing decision.
