Goldsboro, NC- The Lincoln Memorial University Women's Soccer team opened their 2023 season with a 2-1 win over Mount Olive at neutral site Bryan Multi-Sport Complex in Goldsboro, NC.
The game would begin relatively quietly on both sides of the ball for the first half of the contest. The Lady Railsplitters had opportunities with seven corners but would not connect to remain scoreless in the period. Goalkeeper
Bente Latenstein would also make three saves to keep the game at 0-0 going into halftime.
In the 49th minute, LMU would take advantage of a free kick opportunity when a
Ryan Branson delivery would lead to a goal from
Ellie Bowen to give the Lady Railsplitters the 1-0 edge.
After a couple of back-and-forth possessions, the Lady Trojans would even the score up at 1-1 in the 72nd minute. Lincoln Memorial wouldn't waste time in responding with a score of their own less than a minute later. This goal would be to the credit of
Alicia Bevins with yet another assist from
Ryan Branson.
Latenstein would total with seven saves on the day behind her solid defense to keep the score in favor of LMU until full time had elapsed, giving the team credit with the first Lincoln Memorial win for the 2023-24 season.
Assistant Coach Kaitlyn Jones said this of today's win: "We feel that we handled the game in a professional manner, both from the preparation and the game itself. While it wasn't our cleanest game, we were able to find ways to be successful in different elements of our play and find the net as the end product. Tasha and I are really proud of how the girls weathered the storm and took care of business on this first road trip of the regular season."
The Women's Soccer team will be back in action on Sunday, September 3rd, with the first home contest of the season against Lees-McRae College at 2 PM at the LMU Lacrosse Complex.
