Harrogate, TN- Lincoln Memorial split games with King University in their doubleheader on Wednesday, February 14th.
Lincoln Memorial would take game one of the doubleheader in exciting fashion by a score of 3-2 in nine innings. It would be battle of the pitchers in the first contest, LMU's graduate transfer
Margot van Eijl would get the start for the Lady Railsplitters. The Tornado would strike first, putting up one run in the third inning. LMU would find an answer right away in the bottom of the frame,
Anna Kate Reichter hitting a single to score
Reese Vivrette. Both defenses would stay solid to leave the game tied at 1-1 at the end of the seventh inning. After electing to use the International softball rules, King would place a runner on second to start the top of the eighth. A sacrifice fly in the inning would score the runner to force LMU into a score or lose situation. With Reichter put on second, a sacrifice bunt from Hannah Bogoski would advance the runner.
Sterre den Duijn would take a ball off the hip and get pinch ran for by
Gracie Palmer.
Katy Pozzuto drawing a walk would give the Splitters a bases loaded situation. Henry would score on a passed ball to even the score 2-2 and force a ninth inning. A three-up-three-down in the top half would open up a walk-off opportunity for Lincoln Memorial. With
Nicole Couvertiere on second, a bunt from
Hannah McMeen would result in an error, scoring the run and giving the the team their third straight win.
Margot van Eijl earns the win, credited with seven strikeouts in her complete game.
The second game would instead feature the bats of both teams. LMU would use the momentum of the first game to go into the second hot. A Vivrette single, Reichter sacrifice bunt, and fielders' choice reaches by Bogoski and den Duijn would load the bases. A pair of walks and yet another fielder's choice would plate three to give LMU the early lead. More walks and an error would start the bottom of the second, opening the door for den Duijn to step up and hammer a double to score all three runners.
Madison Henry would later step up in the frame to hit a double of her own and score two more. Henry would later cross the plate on a wild pitch to be the sixth run of the inning for the team. King would find an answer, though, and swing the momentum back their way, putting up four in the top of the fourth inning. The fifth inning would continue the storm for the Tornado, as the Railsplitters would have a plethora of errors and chaos to allow King to take the lead 11-9.
Jordann Reagan would gain one back for the Splitters but the rally would pause there, leaving the final score at 10-11 in King's favor.
Lincoln Memorial will return to action on Saturday, February 17th, to compete in the LMU Invitational against Grand Valley State at 2 PM at Dorothy Neely Field.
