Women's lacrosse falls to Anderson in hard fought game to end season

Anderson, SC - Three days after downing Emory & Henry in the final game of the regular season, the Lincoln Memorial women's lacrosse team took to Anderson, SC to take on the Anderson Trojans in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. As the three-seed, the Trojans hosted the Railsplitters who were the six-seed. Earlier this season, Anderson defeated Lincoln Memorial 20-4 at Anderson. Even though they knew they had their work cut out for them, the Railsplitters didn't back down, taking the game to-the-wire against the Trojans on Saturday.

Josie Tinnerello set the tone, scoring the game's first goal with 12:10 left in the first quarter to give the Railsplitters the 1-0 lead. However, the Trojans responded with five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead. Tinerello added her second goal of the game with an assist from Breanna Booth to chip into the lead, 5-2. Anderson added the first quarter's last goal with :18-seconds left to take a 6-2 lead into the second quarter. Lincoln Memorial outscored Anderson 5-4 in the second quarter. The Railsplitters came out fast in the second quarter, scoring the first three goals. Liza Buckner uncorked the scoring, tallying her first goal of the game with an assist from Chandler Bell. Tinnerello tallied her hat trick early in the second quarter with an assist from Amber Kirkpatrick to cut the deficit to 6-4. Less than a minute later, Tinnerello scored again, this time with an assist from Bell, cutting the game back to within a single goal, 6-5. The Trojans answered with a goal and Buckner answered back with her second of the game to keep the deficit at one goal, 7-6. Anderson scored back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 9-6. Buckner tallied her hat trick in the final minute of the first half with an assist from Bell. However, Anderson added its final goal of the first half in the closing seconds of the period to take a 10-7 lead into the half.

The third period also belonged to Lincoln Memorial, outscoring Anderson 5-3, cutting the deficit to 13-12 heading into the final frame. On a player-up advantage in the first thirty seconds of the second half, Jessie McKilligan tallied her first goal of the game, assisted by Kirkpatrick. The Trojans matched the goal to keep the score at 11-8. Lincoln Memorial added back to back goals from Bell and Jaiden Jaynes. Bell also assisted Jaynes' goal, bringing the score to 11-10. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the period with the tandem of Tinnerello and Bell connecting twice to keep the game tight, 13-12. It was Tinnerello's fifth and sixth goal of the game, as well as Bell's fifth and sixth assist. Anderson struck first in the final period. Jaynes added her second of the game to keep the deficit at one goal. However, three straight goals from Anderson would prove to be the difference in the game as the score swelled to 17-13. Kirkpatrick tallied her first goal of the game with 5:04 remaining. Tinnerello added her seventh and final goal of the game with just over one minute left in the game. As the horn sounded, the Lincoln Memorial comeback effort fell just short, seeing the Trojans advance in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament, and the Railsplitters' season come to an end. With the loss, Lincoln Memorial's final record of the season moved to 6-11.
