Harrogate, TN - While it may be often unrealistic to strive for perfection, that's exactly what the Lincoln Memorial baseball team did on Tuesday after wrapping up the regular season schedule at home against Erskine. With the victory, the Railsplitters finished the regular season unblemished at home against non-conference opposition. It also marked the 30th victory of the campaign, marking back to back 30-win seasons for the first time since 17-19. Head coach
Justin Haywood also captured his 100th overall win as the Lincoln Memorial head coach, resting at fifth all-time.
The Flying Fleet struck first in Tuesday's game, but Lincoln Memorial quickly took control in the bottom of the first and never looked back, cruising to victory. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning,
Cameron Bowen gave the Railsplitters their first lead of the game with a 2RBI double to left field, driving in
Kasten Harvey and
Collin Goda.
Ryan Kurth added to the run total with a 2RBI single to left, driving in
Carson Boles and Bowen to extend the lead to 4-2. The teams held one another scoreless in the second inning before the Railsplitters got back on the board in the bottom of the third inning.
Chris Hall was credited with an RBI after reaching third on an error, allowing
Alex Kowalski to score.
Joey LaMattina then drove in Hall with an RBI double to left to give Lincoln Memorial a 6-0 lead. The Railsplitters continued to hold the Flying Fleet scoreless, adding to their run total in the process. In the bottom of the fourth, Harvey delivered an RBI double to drive in Goda. Bowen then added an RBI, driving in Harvey to extend the lead to 8-1. The teams posted goose eggs in the fifth. Lincoln Memorial's pitching and fielding continued to keep the Flying Fleet grounded, allowing zero runs between the second and seventh inning, while continually adding to its run total . In the bottom of the sixth inning, Boles connected on a solo shot rocket over the left field wall, extending the Railsplitter lead to 9-1. Erskine added a run in the top of the eighth with a home run to cut the lead to 9-2. However, not to be outdone, Harvey connected on a solo missile in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Lincoln Memorial's final run of the game and extending the lead to 10-2. Erskine added two runs in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't near enough to extend the game, seeing the Railsplitters take a 10-4 victory.
Carter White got the start from the mound, pitching three innings, allowing two hits, one run, and zero earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts.
Aiden Carter saw time in relief, pitching two innings, allowing zero hits, zero runs, and zero earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts. Hallock, Christopher, Murphy, and Ellison each saw time in relief. Ellison closed the game in the final two innings, allowing three hits, three runs, and three earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Railsplitters will now await their conference fate as other teams throughout the conference wrap up their seasons this weekend.
